The Many Replicas of the Eiffel Tower

In January we talked about the Statue of Liberty in New York and its replicas. Today we’ll continue the discussion but talk about another famous monument: the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is perhaps the most famous tower in the world and the most copied. In fact, even the company that manages it says it is fairly impossible to know exactly how many other versions are scattered about the globe. In this post, we will take you on a tour of some of the best.

Eiffel Tower

Hangzhou (China)

This tower rises in eastern China, on the outskirts of Hangzhou (Zheijang). And although more than one traveler has fallen in love with it, it is much smaller than the original Eiffel Tower (only 103 meters compared to the original 325 meters). It is part of a development, a huge residential complex in which more than 5,000 people live. Although it’s not the Champ de Mars, it has its own charms and is worth seeking out this Eiffel Tower replica. And why is it there? The Chinese love the City of Light and so they have built this impressive monument in their own land. There is another small difference compared to the original: you cannot climb this tower. In Paris, however, there are long queues day and night throughout the year. And if you want to see more, this is possible in China. Just behind this tower in Hangzhou you’ll find a replica of the Champs Elysees but without the Arc de Triomphe.

Tokyo

Known as Tokyo Tower, this is one of the least similar replicas to the original but there is no doubt that its design was inspired by the Parisian tower. Located in Minako-Ku, it is the highest metal tower in the world. This Japanese construction measures 332 meters, which is higher than the original. It is also 4,000 tons lighter than the Eiffel Tower, which is weighs 10,100 tons. Curiously enough, it doesn’t have a tourist or residential purpose but is actually an antenna.

Tegucigalpa (Honduras)

This replica was built to scale by Honduran artisans in the Plaza de los Dolores of Old Tegucigalpa. Measuring 8 meters and made of metal like the Eiffel Tower, it was donated by France to commemorate the national holiday, Bastille Day. It symbolizes unity and amity between the two countries. It was also the first replica to be built in Latin America (most are in Asia).

Las Vegas

In Las Vegas anything goes. In Las Vegas nothing is surprising. In Las Vegas everything is possible. In Vegas there are no limits. Not only can one see a replica of the canals of Venice, but there’s also a copy of the most famous tower in the City of Light. Although the replica was initially planned to be taller than the original, the architects had to shorten it because of its proximity to the airport. It measures 165 meters high. It opened in 1999.
