Roze Filmdagen Festival in Amsterdam

Turning popular culture into a corporate event is always a risk when it comes to creating festivals or cultural events of all kinds. Today, the cities of the world invest in creating events, festivals, concerts, exhibitions and political actions, with the targeted reason to be better  outlined in the international arena, making the city itself a competent city, cosmopolitan, politically correct  while criticism of the political contexts are generated by its governments . Thus, the profile of a postmodern city has all these ingredients, there is no homophobia, you demonstrate on the streets if it´s a protest, there is tolerance towards immigration and the residence of foreigners,  art and culture from  all over the world is consumed, and there is a respect for the multiplicity of cultures, its meetings and tangents, and production of new knowledge. Nothing could be more utopian. The truth is that today, the EU implies a state of xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny and ultra right fascism that is eating away the foundations of the meaning of its existence. While the “alleged” reason for the formation of the European Union was stopping the possibility of another World War, that  war has now gone to the people, usually minorities inhabiting the continent. And that is the current state of the political and economic global system:  we are all minorities. Of course, unlike other places, tolerance and political presence of the LGBT community, immigrants, feminists and anti-system exists. However, it does have a serious contradiction between the cultural policies of cities and the actions of these groups, you better keep your eyes open. We then have for example an...

Amsterdam: beyond the coffee shops

Not only of drugs and sex a man lives. In Amsterdam, the famous coffee shops are the delight of thousands of tourists. Look at it from this perspective; there is nothing better than going to a cafe to drink a delicious cappuccino or latte and being able to smoke hashish or marijuana, in a joint, a bong or water pipe of the best quality. This is a pleasure that not many people can enjoy in their countries of origin, which is why so many tourists come to this city looking for the best varieties of marijuana. The legality of marijuana in these cafes, makes a friendly encounter possible in this cosmopolitan city. Similarly, many people interested in sex tourism visit the Red Light district of the city, where beautiful women from all parts of the globe, behind colored glass windows, are available for different services, rates, tastes, fetishes, etc.. More about this district is not to say. However, Amsterdam has many more activities to offer if you are looking for varied tourism, good atmosphere and meet new friends. Generally, people in Amsterdam are so friendly and open to meet new people; do not be surprised with a spontaneous dialogue or toast in a bar or restaurant. The list of museums and historical places in the city is wide and offers many alternatives, if you like history and culture. Amsterdam and its anti-marihuana laws for tourists

For over forty years, the city of Amsterdam has been at the front of the most liberal laws on drug consumption and the sex market. Without doubt, it´s an important option to consider if you´re travelling around Europe and you´re looking for a place where you can lose your inhibitions and have a good time. Further than just fun, of course, is the condition that a city can possess liberal laws of this type that, for one, have a better control on drug consumption and prostitution. This way, the quality of the drugs that are consumed can be controlled better by small markets inside the city itself, and the sexual workers can access better rights and services, as well as better security. The new law that bans tourists buying marihuana was presented in June 2011. At first, this law tries to go further than just reduce the consumption of marihuana in Amsterdam, it tries to stop many tourists buying drugs in the city and transporting it to other cities in the European Union. It´s known that a high number of tourists that go to Amsterdam are looking for what we can call ´drug tourism´, and it´s a recurrent financial income for the community. The effects of a resolution of this type can certainly affect the city´s economy and the hundreds of stores that work as coffee shops. How to achieve this type of restriction? Easy. A card or an ID for the use of drugs in the famous coffee shops would only be available for the citizens of Amsterdam. Only this way would one have access to the legal...

Carnival in Amsterdam

Carnival is a time for joy, where everyone pours onto the streets to meet each other and let go of the oppressions that society imposes on them as a way of social control. Despite being linked to pagan rituals, the carnival date is related with the Christian holiday of Lent, and that´s why they´re all celebrated on different dates in February. Amsterdam is one of the European cities that carries out a carnival every year. Despite that these parties aren´t part of its culture, the Latin American immigrants have transferred their beliefs and expressions to this cosmopolitan city. This year, the Amsterdam Carnival will take place on Saturday 18th of February and, like every year, the city will dress up to see and listen all the dances. The carnival begins after the Mayor symbolically gave the keys of the city to the Carnival King. While the party lasts, the Carnival King is the owner of the city and imposes all of his rules in order to transform formality, sadness and obligations into collective joy. During his reign, the city dresses up with feathers and shiny colours. This celebration, that has brought the citizens of Amsterdam to craziness, has clear Latin American influences, especially from the Rio Carnival, since it´s the community that has the most relevance in its organization. Also, this carnival has influenced the aesthetics of most of these celebrations by being one of the most famous around the world. For the carnival parades, the Latin communities prepare themselves all year long and each express their culture rather than their religiousness with their music, dances, choreographies and costumes. Carnival...
