The Merchant of Venice in Barcelona.

The Catalan National Theatre presents an adaptation of one of the greatest classics of literature, “The Merchant of Venice.” This version is adapted to the times of global economic crisis. From the hand of the playwright Rafael Durán, we will be able to enjoy one of the greatest dramas of literature. The work is based on one of the masterpieces of William Shakespeare. “The Merchant of Venice” is a book that has been interpreted, adapted and chosen as the standard argument of many other books and movies countless times. In this play, Duran take us from the seventeenth-century Venice to Wall Street, the heart of the global economy, whose beats move the world. The story shows us the consequences of the abuse of individual debt. It addresses such controversial issues as the causes that have led to the current state of crisis and possible stigmas inshort and medium term. Shylock, one of the main characters in Shakespeare´s novel, becomes one of the leading proponents of the powerful Jewish lobby in American finance. The actors, who will perform at this play, are recognized artists from Catalan origin, Pep Ambrós, Albert Ausellè, Marta Betriu and Àlex Casanovas among others. The presentations will take place from 1st of February to the 25th of March in the Sala Gran at the National Theatre of Catalonia in Barcelona. Barcelona – Athletic de Bilbao

On the 1st of April 2012, Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao is being played at the Camp Nou. It´s one of the most emblematic matches of Spain´s football league which has been an uninterrupted fixture since the beginning of the league in 1929. Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, together with Real Madrid, are the only teams in Spain´s first division who have never been relegated in their history. This year, to this thrilling fixture, there´s the added spice that both teams will also be the finalists of the 109th edition of the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Cup, on the 25th of May at the Vicente Calderón stadium in Madrid. Throughout history, there have been numerous and legendary matches between these two teams which have been a major talking point. It´s inevitable to talk about the Copa del Rey final in 1984 when there was a huge fight between the players of both teams, images that went around the world. Also, more recently, in the last Copa del Rey final in 2009, Barcelona beat ´Los Leones´ (Athletic´s nickname, The Lions´) 4-1. Another object of rivalry between the two clubs is the honours list in terms of Cup champions. Barcelona is ahead with 25 titles, two more than Athletic. Regarding league trophies, Barcelona is clearly ahead 21 to 8, with the Basque club having not won the league since 1984. Athletic is one of the most curious teams in the world, not just Spain, because they play only with Basque and Navarran players. This is a tradition which has been taking place throughout their history. More than once the club has discussed...

What exactly is the Travel Talk on Twitter? The Travel Talk on Twitter is a social media travel event on Twitter created by traveldudes.org It exists since January 2011 and under the motto “For Travelers, By Travelers” there are two sessions every Tuesday where 5 questions to a relevant travel topic are being discussed . To participate in this ongoing and growing talk about everything travel, you simply have to look for the hashtag #TTOT on Twitter. Though there are scheduled times for #TTOT you can tweet travel related information using this hashtag any time. Over the traveldudes website or their Facebook page you can suggest topics and questions for upcoming talks, but also see and contact those in the travel community who always participate and help to organize this event. We from Only-apartments have been participating in the TTOT for a while now and on March 20, 2012 one of our topic suggestions was picked to be discussed. Here is a selection of our favorite #TTOT answers about “Lost in Translation”: Q1 via @trevormorrow: From experience, what have you learned not to do or say in certain countries or cities? #TTOT We read many tweets that went around similar lines and we think that this one might have summed it up best: An answer that made us wonder and where we would like to find out the story behind it: Q2 via @megamondotravel: Funniest, most ridiculous “lost in translation” communication meltdown you´ve experienced? The following one is just one of the many that made us laugh: Q3 via Robyn Boswell: What adventure/disaster have you had because you mis-interpreted...

Expo Volum! in Barcelona

In times of crisis, it seems that not even the major institutions of contemporary art have enough funds to invest in organizing innovative and real “contemporary” exhibitions in which to appraise actual creation and innovation, perhaps in which it is possible to get to know emerging artists who came to an idea that has not been seen before on that same way. In this respect, the example given by MACBA today, is not the best and yet, the show “Volum!” is worth seeing because it brings together three hundred and fifty works by artists who have marked our recent history. This exhibition, which is the result of an agreement signed by La Caixa Foundation (the social responsibility of the Spanish bank) and the MACBA Museum, does little more than open the store and exposing the huge collection of works by the two institutions. On the one hand, it is clear that they had not invested much in conservatorship (also the curator is the same Bartomeu Marí, director of MACBA), and have risked nothing with this event. But on the other hand, we must also emphasize that many of the works presented here are milestones of contemporary art, not very often you have the chance to see them in the same space. The concept of this exhibition, which explains the title “Volum!”, is the introduction of noise in the works of visual art during the transition from the twentieth to the twenty-first century. It is also the first of a series of three exhibitions, which will exhibit a selection of the 5,500 works from the common fund of La Caixa...

James Morrison Concert in Barcelona

James Morrison is not Jim Morrison. Jim Morrison was a drug addict and drunk fiend, the teenage girl terror in California. Jim Morrison was James Douglas Morrison, a young American of a rather broad intelligence and vivid curiosity. With an army of readings ranging from medieval demonology, philosophy, Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Rimbaud and Marshall McLuhan and his “Civilization of Show”, Jim Morrison prepared a singular cocktail during the 60´s and next to The Doors, change the rules of live music, music not only with a certainly fabulous talented band, but also in the way to confront the public during a live performance, the strengths and weaknesses of advertising pop stars, film and of course, mass media. The Doors were like a trigger in a turbulent period of crisis, of war, there was still much to discover in the trenches of pop. Morrison, Jim James, was a kind of comet that left a trail whose light remains to this day, with many lessons yet to be learn or relearn. And we´re not talking about the stupid myth, we are talking about the actions performed on stage. Period. We must recognize that the dynamics of pop music have changed dramatically over the last thirty years. The danger of a pop band or a pop singer that has been tamed even further by the market is questionable . The public itself is responsible for the taming of its stars, that is the public that also has become complacent and unwilling to see their stars burn, they prefer to keep them, put them on the Iphone. Surely, there will not be another...

Antoni Tapies: In Memoriam in Barcelona

How do we confront the death of an artist? Because death is an everyday event, inherent to human nature, our culture, our material condition on earth. We are all willing to die, eventually, that we do not like death, that is for sure, but it is inevitable, as a poet once said its the reason in the first instance for being born. However an artist´s death shakes us further, especially if he has been of such importance, if his work has transcended into the hearts and minds of many people. Perhaps art is just that hard race against death, looking for ways to fix life in any way, any shape that is possible, a bond in order to perpetuate life on Earth. It sounds very romantic and “cliché”, but somehow we all findd a refuge in art of the everyday, an outlet to rebel ourselves, to think deeply and differently. A true artist summons these forces into one and takes us further than we ever thought, they takes us out of our small world and shakes us. Antoni Tapies was one of those artists. Tapies was born in Barcelona in 1923 into a middle class family. After suffering lung disease, his interest in reading would increase even more, and he spend time devoted to drawing and painting. Later, and without thinking about it too much, he would leave his law studies for art so he can devote to it completely. During the forties he already was exhibiting his work and received recognition from specialized critics which up until today, continues as present as ever in all media. The story...
