Barcelona Tattoo Expo 2011

Over the 30th of September, and the 1st and 2nd of October 2011, the 14th edition of the Tattoo Expo takes place in Barcelona, at the Farga in Hospitalet de Llobregat. This year, the program is full of new additions and exclusives; “street” zone, competitions, piercings, art, dance, fashion, seminars and much more will be transforming the Barcelona venue over the three days. Pin-ups, professionals, and anyone who loves tattoos; acclaimed tattoo artists, tourists, young people and older ones are all welcome to the international festival of tattoo. Talking about tattoos is also to talk about music, fashion styles and trends, graffiti, sports, performance, accessories and endless other things. Knowing that countries like the United States, Greece, Tahiti, Brazil, Japan, China, Mexico and Germany will all be represented at the fair with a number of experts, a variety of differing styles and influences – it cannot fail to be a success. When I think of the word tattoo, I remember the works of Belgium artist Wim Delvoye, the medical laser procedures to remove the ink, the day that a Spanish friend showed me her forearm, with the phrase “Music moves the soul” tattooed in German, and with a Lucida Handwriting style typeface – and I think about the two blue points my step-father got done on his wrist whilst in the army. Nothing to do with the sophisticated stuff people put on their skin every day. During the Barcelona Tattoo Expo, body art is always like a competition which is ongoing – the visitors are invited to participate in the free categories, or be a part of the jury....

Barcelona Literary Routes

Many tourists in Barcelona are just satisfied by proving that they walked into La Sagrada Familia Church, their hands touched Antoni Gaudi’s dragon or that their palate tasted the absinthe at Marsella Bar, while they remembered Hemingway. Other tourists play the role of being literary detectives. Their mission lies in finding the places that inspired writers like Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Ildefonso Falcones or Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Barcelona’s literary routes invite us on an excursion through the city in fiction times.   Some tourists make a journey back in time to the 1970’s, to get into the character of the detective Pepe Carvahlo, the hero of Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’s novels. From Galicia originally, his character is known for his like for pa amb tomàquet as well as for the girls who offered sex in the streets of the Chinese Town, which was the former name of the Raval Neighborhood. The fans of crime fiction know that the Boadas Bar has served as the scene of their stories and they will not hesitate to order the Mediterranean menu Pepe Carvhalo in the Casa Leopoldo Restaurant. Other tourists will book a room at the Hotel Barceló Fraval, a building made of iron that has a terrace and pink lighting at night, whose structure is located in a square named Manual Vásquez Montalbán. Since the moment the novel “Olympic Sabotage” was launched, which is about the transformation of Barcelona before the Olympic games of 1992, the cityscape that Carvhalo fell in love with, has metamorphosed. Booking a ticket for a literary route is wandering around the current city of Barcelona, but from the...

Open Air Cinema in Barcelona, Sala Montjuïc

It´s one of the best summer activities for all cinema lovers, promoted by the Barcelona Council: open air cinema screenings, where you´ll be able to enjoy a selection of the best films of all time and short films, with a picnic and plenty of people! The films begin at 10.15pm sharp and are preceded by the screening of a short film at 10pm. In the next few dates two films were selected and another one, which will coincide with the closing of the festival, will be a surprise. On August 1st the short film ´Todo queda en família´ (It all stays in the family) by Lluís Fabra will be screened, as well as the film ´Still Walking´ (2008) by the Japanese director Hikorazu Koreeda. This film tells the story of a son and a daughter that, after a long time, go back to their parent´s house with their own families. The reason behind this reunion is the commemoration of the tragic death of the eldest son in an accident fifteen years before. Like in all families, love and ill-feeling reign here too. Apparently nothing has changed, they know each other like nobody else does and it all seems to be the same. However, it isn´t. Each one presents small changes that will create peculiar situations. ´Still Walking´ is a very subtle and delicate family drama, which takes place on a summer´s day. For the Oriental film fans, this will be a great surprise. Also, this film was given various awards in different film festivals in Asia and Japan. The screening on August 3rd will be dedicated to the short...

Jodorowsky in Barcelona: Dreams and fantasy

From 23rd February to 2nd March, the Caixa Forum will be holding a series of conferences themed around dreams, and the fascination that this biological activity has long held for the science world, led by writer, director, playwright and tarot expert, Alejandro Jodorowsky – a man well-known in the world of dream interpretation. We spend a large part of our lives dreaming – and not just during sleep, but also day-dreaming, which allows us to escape reality, and transport us to a fantasy world free of problems. Which is why the function of dreams and fantasy are crucial for healthy mental development, and a generally balanced body and mind. If we consider the fact that we live in a virtual society, where communication and social life have stopped being physical, with fantasies created about people we know via social networking sites – we realise that fantasy is something we encounter on a daily basis, particularly during our dreams, where the two often merge. This is why the study of dreams and their contents is an enormous point of interest in today´s society, just as it was for Swiss clinical psychiatrist and essayist Carl Gustav Jung, who collaborated with Sigmund Freud, dedicating himself to dream analysis. Jung discovered a key part of the subconscious mind which is shared by all human beings, which transcends all kinds of geographic or racial origin. It is characterized by archetypes, instinctive behavioural and perceptive patterns found in the dreams of all cultures, throughout the history of mankind. Jung studied the hallucinations of the mentally ill, finding that they all shared key characteristics throughout the world, which implied that the human...

Goth Christmas Festival 2010, Barcelona

There are many kinds of Dioramas. One of these is a Christmas nativity scene, which depicts the birth of Jesus and often occupies an important place beside the Christmas tree. But the Christmas scene I want to talk about now is another one full of musical talent, sensuality and dark elegance! That’s right Goth lords and ladies; we’re talking about Barcelona’s Goth Christmas Festival! Get ready to hear the Germans Diorama, a dark electro band that, along with another great band from Germany, De / vision, will make everyone swoon at the 2010 edition of the classic “Dark Christmas Festival.” As always, what really matters here are the bands. Diorama was formed by Torben Wendt in 1996 as a side project. Torben collaborated with other bands like “Diary of Dreams.”   Diorama released their first album of the year 1999, and thanks to the success of “Pale”  the project expanded and musicians Marc and Bernard Felix joined the band. Now they have seven albums, under their belt, and highlights include “Pale”, “Her liquid arms,” “A different life” and their latest release, “Cubed”, which has led them to number one on the Deutsche Alternative Charts. This album is definitely worth a listen, and you will probably get to hear them play it along with older favorites at the festival. You can also enjoy German synth-pop veterans De / vision, who have a long career that began in 1988. Since then they’ve release 11 albums and have won the hearts and ears of loyal followers. The band´s concert promises to get you dancing to the electronic rhythms nonstop. Two local bands on...
