The Convent de Sant Agusti in Barcelona
The Convent de Sant Agustí, also known as Sant Agustí Vell, is a unique space from the fourteenth century, which now is used as a district activity center and a bar. It is located in the Ciutat Vella, particularly in the area of ??the Riviera (between Santa Caterina and Sant Pere, next to the Borne neighbourhood). The main axis, both physical and functional is the charming Gothic cloister where we find the two main entrances to the enclosure, the main street in Commerce Street number 36 and a back entrance in the square of the Academy and Tantarantana Street, which has built annexed building for the center´s activities. The convent has seven centuries of history behind it as the first stone was laid in 1349 and continued until the eighteenth century building. The pumps of 1714 and the construction of the Military Citadel in 1716 affected the convent so that part of the building had to be moved into the Hospital street (in the Raval) and is what is now known as Sant Agustí Nou (new) . Since its inauguration by the community of Augustinian friars, it has always been very close to the guilds of the city, especially to the tanners, as their walled settlement was near the Rec Comtal, through which water passed and was used to work skin and leather. Proof of this is the altarpiece (1436-1486) that the same guild commissioned the painter Jaume Huguet for the missing altar of the church which today can be seen partially in the MNAC and the Museum Marés. Sanja Ivekovic at the MOMA in New York
Much before that conceptual art was the everyday work of contemporary artists, many plastic artists explored new resources and the most recent forms of media diffusion to question political systems as well as the constant social and gender injustices, using means which were distributed and, at the same time, extensions of the very same mainstream: there where Big Brother began its walk across adjustment and repression, these artists found signs that transposed, could put the artistic system in big problems. The first conceptualism of the 60s, especially the categories and variants of what today is known as Fluxus, not only had a great impact at a social and political level when seen from afar or from a certain distance, but, also, at the same time, were trying to disarm the stiff edges of art; rupture, questioning the gallery and the museum. Also, during the time of the Soviet Union and the Cold War, many artists in Eastern Europe and other latitudes expressed their discontent with the imposing passing of a political system which, without any freedom, strived to make many people believe that the revolution was around the corner. Among those artists, the important Sanja Ivekovi?, will be exhibiting at the MOMA, showing these inherent and current processes in her artistic work. ´Sweet Violence´ is the name of this exhibition, the first one in an American museum by this Bosnian artist. Crazy Horse in Madrid
One of the greatest attractions of the last Venice Film Festival, was the presence of the American director Frederick Wiseman (Boston, 1930) to present a documentary on the legendary Parisian cabaret ´Crazy Horse´ which has just turned 60 years old. Of course, he would deny this term, and not without motive. Wiseman isn´t interested in labels and neither does he share the need to separate films in different genres, especially his, in which the dramatical structure has always been the common essential element, the core that runs across them may be his interest for the human body -and his inherent yet deceiving fragility- in all his manifestations, from the way i which the world of ballet uses it as an essential way of expression to the use that the monks (which in some way they try to deny) or the soldiers (for whom it constitutes a weapon or tool of aggression and attack) make of them. Hence that Wiseman has no qualms in admitting that, actually, what made him make this latest film was just ´Crazy Horse´ in particular, an inexcusable reference for all genre lovers, of which he´s been carrying the flag and has been a reference point for over six decades. An inside ´Crazy Horse´ his interest focuses on, another common aspect of his work, the people, specifically the fabulous and legendary dancers, whose gaze, fluctuating between tenderness and the most consuming and desiring voyeurism, makes them exceptional as professionals of their art and as people.
