The MOMA in New York
The Museum of Modern Art of New York, also known as MOMA, is probably the museum which has set the pace for many years regarding the organization of an art museum in the 20th century. The origins of the museum date from the 1920s and they articulate, of course, from personal collections, investments, the Rockafeller surname somewhere in there, and a very long etcetera. Among them, fundamental exhibitions like one of Van Gogh and Picasso which would catapult them both to what they are now: icons of modern art, above their real talent and great work, the MOMA turned them into posters, postcards, paintings for the bathroom, towels, soaps, etc. What´s true is that for many years, even until today, the importance of MOMA hasn´t dissolved and that´s because of the invaluable quality of its collection, with very important works of suprematism, cubism, surrealism and dadaism among others, as well as key works of impressionism and expressionism from the end of the 20th century. We also consider that in a visit to the MOMA you can find designs by Bauhaus, architectural models, an unbelievable library and a cute café at the top. But how much of all of this actually intervenes in today´s contemporary art? The MOMA institution keeps on redefining itself and putting on the table the best of its collection. Of course there´s also the PS-1, a space which also belongs to MOMA, but dedicated to contemporary art from the 1950s until today. It seems that, in Europe, the economic recession has brought unemployment, hunger, racism, classism and violence all around it, as well as a great...Fleet Foxes in Vienna
Folk is a musical style with sounds which are linked to nature, which rubs with accoustics at times and which, today, is experimenting an important rise with some bands which are at the head of this genre. One of these bands is, undoubtedly, Fleet Foxes, who were born in Seattle, Washington, in 2006 and after five years presented two albums which had considerable success. The first one, a namesake album, was presented in 2008 and, in 2011, they released ´Helplessness Blues´, which was well received by both critics and fans. It all started thanks to Robin Pecknold, who plays guitar and is also the voice of Fleet Foxes, and Skyler Skjelset, the other guitarist, since they both went together to Lake Washington High school in Seattle and, thanks to the mutual admiration that they had for Bob Dylan and Neil Young, they ended up making music together. The end result was what we all know today, Fleet Foxes. The rest of the band members are J. Tillman on drums, Morgan Henderson who is a multi-instrumentalist who is in charge of practically anything that´s necessary, Casey Wescott on keyboard and Christian Wargo on bass. With only two albums, the band managed to achieve a few hits, such as ´Sun It Rises´, ´Ragged Wood´, ´Your Protector´, ´Montezuma´, ´White Winter Hymnal´, ´Helplessness Blues´, and many others. Despite them having been making music for a while, they actually used to be called Pineapple, they became more and more famous at the end of 2006 when a journalist from the Seattle Times wrote about them making reference to the maturity of their lyrics and...Aleksandr Rodčenko in Rome
On the 11th of October, the Palazzo delle Esposizione in Rome inaugurates the exhibition by the Russian artist Aleksandr Rod?enko, a stand out member of the avant-garde from the beginning of the 20th century and an influent member of the intellectuality of his time. The exhibition commissioned by Olga Sviblova is organized by the Moscow House of Photography Museum and it tries to show the importance that the Russian avant-garde had in the universal culture through the creative energy which is fully reflected in the work of Aleksandr Rod?enko. The importance that the Russian avant-garde had in universal art can be traced to our days, where we still find certain aspects of suprematism which Malevich funds in an attempt to reduce painting to the simplest lines. Futurism is, up to today, part of the artistic expressions or the constructivism which primed in architecture and it inspired contemporary desconstructive architecture with its straight lines. Aleksandr Rod?enko was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1891. Son of the designer and scenographer Mikhail Majlovich Rod?enko and a washerwoman, he followed his father´s footsteps by studying in the Art Institute in the city of Kazan. These were years of great movement in arts and philosophy, and he initially got interested in poetry after reading Mayakovsky and admiring his revolutionary strength, his internationalism, his futurist creation and the deep love for freedom that took him to defy totalitarian power. Through Mayakovsky he got into futurism and suprematism, which would be marked in his early paintings. Restless to get to know all the new techniques, he took an interest for photomontage and dadaism due to their groundbreaking character with...Post-it in Paris: an urban war
In Paris, it has been said, there are few places where the sky is worth more than the ground. The pedestrian walks in a state of perpetual bewilderment, amazed at the endless series of erratic and random twists and turns that make up the heart of this city: a quintessential surrealist object in itself, as Walter Benjamin observed. The visitor’s eyes are drawn from different heights, from the mouth of the Guimard Metro and the glass blocks in certain streets to the gargoyles at the top of Notre-Dame which guard the city from evil. Almost every historical period and artistic style in European history has left its mark in Paris. As have Europe’s many wars. The city has undergone innumerable changes as its people have lived and created and, at times, fought for their very survival. The latest war for survival involves unlikely antagonists and it is expressed in a largely urban visual language which signals a distinct paradigm shift. The latest battlefield is set in the financial neighbourhoods where you will find banks, telecommunications companies and the media, along with advertising agencies and multinational corporations like Coca-Cola. It all began in the gleaming facades of the office park in Montreuil, east of the city, but soon spread into the modern business district of La Défense and the enclave of Ile de France Issy-les-Molineaux. Everyday there are new battles being waged, both in the very centre of Paris and in distant cities such as Lille and Lyon, prompting fears that the conflict could cross the Channel and extend to England. The country is suffering the fatal consequences of an economic crisis triggered by...Al Buongustaio Restaurant in Rome
