Salvador Dali in Montmartre

There is something shocking in the character of Salvador Dali that impregnates with a halo of concern his full works. This born exhibitionist who made his life a media show was, at once a timid, even withdrawn character. While this indefatigable diver  of the depths dived in the unconsciousness of his being, he started in life at  an early age surrounded  by  books full of art, knowing that his genius lurked behind his well-know desire for provocation. Precursor of modern performances, he found the right environment for it in the bustling Paris between the wars. Despite his  elitist education (no need to remember the names of those with whom he shared the concerns of youth), or because of it, Dalí was suffocating in the academic environments of a stale Madrid in the early years of the last century. Young Salvador was possessed by a ghost (the unconscious one, the dark and female part  of the male psyche) that constantly egged him to find new discoveries. It is therefore not surprising that uttering the famous phrase at the Academy (“None of us who are here have enough talent for self-examination” in a fairly free quote) headed  to Paris, the intellectual and artistic center of the time. To say that Paris in the early decades of the twentieth century was only  the meeting place of writers, painters, sculptors, filmmakers and intellectuals from around the world is an brutal understatement. In the bohemian neighborhood of the French capital all those who now occupy whole chapters of history rubbed together. Paris attraction exerted itself as a powerful magnet for all those restless creative...

Paris Photo 2011

They say that photography is about portraying an ´instant´, of capturing ´the moment´. There´s no more retrograded and out of date explanation of what really photograph is today. And with the social network boom, especially since the growth of Facebook, the resource of photography has surpassed the expectancies of its supposed function of ´capturing´ and ´portraying´. Photography today is a daily part of our social interaction in the networks. Of course, you see the photos of families, friends, acquaintances, concerts and so on on the net, but this is well above the mere image. Photography today is used as a constructing resource of image and discourse on a personal level, levels which are alarming and which generate plenty of questions. All in all, little is studied about these phenomenons and their reach. Today, common citizens strive to potentiate their social image and character from their network profiles. What´s offered to the eye is not what´s real but, what is it? There´s no sure condition on the image which is presented and about it, the whole world can draw conclusions or comment, reproduce the image to others, or mention themselves in it. And so, from an image, more texts and other images, comments and discussions are generated. The fiction which is produced from these portraits which seem everyday like, can be taken to extreme fiction which many people consume in a lot of their time. Producing an image with resources such as Photoshop and other programmes is now in everyone´s reach. Virtual and reality are confused, and what was just a ´portrait´ is now a confusion or unfolding or ideas...

Film and dance at the Pompidou in Paris

Until the 15th of December, the Centre Georges Pompidou presents ´Film de Danse 2011´, which through documentaries and videos gathers the work of the greatest dance choreographers which marked the 20th century with their stagings. The presentation takes place at Cine 2 every first Thursday of the month. On Thursday November 3rd the presentation of ´Maïa Plissetskaïa´ will take place, a life documentary of the famous choreographer and dancer which was made by Elizabeth Kapnist and Christian Dumais-Lvowski. The documentary contains narrations with interviews and stories on the life, travels and political situation of the former USSR which shaped this ballerina of the 20th century. Plissetskaïa was the greatest ballerina of the Soviet Bolschoi ballet which had big conflicts for its political position contrary to Stalinism. Her perfect movements and her style´s harmony made her into an icon of world ballet. She danced until she was 50 years old, an age which was considered advanced for a prime ballerina, which was a turning point on stage. At 50 years old she opted for modern ballet and transformed herself into a choreographer, despite that she still danced with extraordinary style. On Thursday 15th of December, three documentaries on the French dancer Boris Charmatz will be screened: ´Disparate Days´ (1999), ´Ascension´ (2000) and ´A slow introduction´ (2008). ´Disparate Days´ lasts 15 minutes and it was made by César Vayssié.
