Mitch Epstein in Paris

Mitch Epstein in Paris

Until 24 June, the Fundación Henri Cartier-Bresson will be exhibiting the project American Power by the artist, Mitch Epstein. The exhibition is based on a series of photographs in which Epstein explores American landscape and society by means of its relation to the power plants that provide the country’s energy. Mitch Epstein was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1952. He studied in the Rhode Island School of Design as well as Cooper Union in New York, where Garry Winogrand was also a student. Epstein experimented with colour photography and helped in its redefinition, an important development, as in the 70s colour photography was used principally in advertising and was not considered a valid medium in the art world. In the 70s he travelled the length of the USA, conducting a photographic exploration. In 1978 he travelled to India where he worked as cinematographer in various films, such as Salaam Bombay and India Cabaret. He also found time to make a book there: In Pursuit of India. Epstein’s quest to depict cultural behaviour and the workings of society led him to Vietnam in the 90s. There, after a long learning process in which he came to understand the history of the country, its colonial past, its wars and the imposition of a modernity alien to its ancient culture, Epstein finished the book Vietnam: A Book of Changes, which was prefaced by Susan Sontag. His last great work, American Power, won the Prix Pictet photography and environmental sustainability prize in 2011 which was presented to him by Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. The project began as an assignment...
Primavera Sound in Barcelona; music through a tube

Primavera Sound in Barcelona; music through a tube

Between the 25th and 29th of May, Barcelona´s music extravaganza San Miguel Primavera Sound takes place at the Parc del Forum. Over five days, various generations gather together to enjoy and get swept away by the electronic rhythms, which this time will have two stages. The 2011 edition of the festival was newly funded by a budget of around 6 million euros, which enabled it to expand its space and open a new stage with a capacity of 20,000 people. The stage is located in the picnic area, and has screens attached to either side for the projection of videos. During the day there will be conferences and meetings between musicians at Poble Nou´s Parc Central. This year, over 100,000 people are expected to attend, surpassing last year. More than 67 groups are hot anticipated, a list which includes The Flaming Lips, Grinderman, Of Montreal and Triángulo de Amor Bizarro (Thursday 26th), Avi Buffalo, Belle & Sebastian, M. Ward and headliners Pulp (Friday 27th), Animal Collective, Fleet Fones, PJ Harvey and The Tallest Man on Earth (Saturday). For both the opening and closing, the festival moves to Poble Espanyol in Monjuic Mountain. One big coup for the festival was getting New York synthpunk band Suicide. Their first album Suicide is considered a classic amongst followers of the music. Though the band, which formed in the 70s, started out as a classic rock band, with the desertion of members, remaining members Alan Vega and Martin Rev swapped their classical guitars for more complex instruments and began experimenting with more hypnotic sounds, which were accompanied by the wild murmurs and shouts...
Nudist beaches in Helsinki

Nudist beaches in Helsinki

Helsinki is well known for the cruise ships arriving from the Baltic Sea, for its famous Suomenlinna Fortress and the Senate Square, but this wonderful city has much more to offer, especially in summer when the sun is constantly illuminating the city 24 hours.   It´s curious, but the Finns enjoy very much the hot and humid weather. Normally, Finnish houses have a sauna in which family members often sit to talk with friends. In Helsinki, you will be able to use the services of the famous Kotiharju Sauna, which is the only public sauna in the city, and still is heated by a traditional wood stove. It is a place where you can have a quiet bath along with 30 completely naked strangers. But this is not the only place where you can get naked, because there are also some nudist beaches where you can enjoy your nudity. One of them is Pihlajasaari Beach, which is near the city of Helsinki located on an island. Here you will enjoy a unisex nudist beach perfect for sunbathing but too rocky to swim. Helsinki is also near Seurasaari, but here you won’t be able to mingle with people of the opposite sex because nudist areas are restricted to women or men. Moreover, in downtown Helsinki you will find a public swimming pool called Yrjönkatu. Here swimsuits are optional and you can swim with or without them. In addition there are unisex sections and also exclusive for men and women....
Loop Festival 2011 in Barcelona

Loop Festival 2011 in Barcelona

Barcelona gets taken over by images and art between the 19th and 21st May with the biggest video art fair in Europe, Loop Festival 2011, organised by Screen Project S.L. As with each year, dozens of national and international artists working with video art will descend upon the city, projecting in various different spaces. Loop is a platform dedicated to the image, which has found in Barcelona its annual meeting point for creators, curators, viewers, distributors, gallerists and specialists to go along to exhibitions, projections, conferences and presentations. Loop Festival started in 2003 with the proposal to create a key reference point for video art for gallerists, critics and potential buyers, and anybody else interested in the new expression of art. The exhibition spaces will be inside Hotel Catalonia Ramblas amongst others. One of the conferences on offer at Loop will be a conversation between British painter, sculptor and videoist Mark Wallinger and professor at Royal College of Art in London, and art critic at The Guardian, Adrian Searle, at the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas. Wallinger is one of the most interesting artists working in England, and is known for the originality of his work. In 2007, he won the Turner Prize for his piece Sleeper, which is a recording the artist made over ten nights at Berlin´s Neue Nationalgalerie Museum, which he spent dressed as bear. But the work that brought him to be included in the prize shortlist was State Britain, an installation made with slogan placards like those of Brian Haw, who for seven years demonstrated outside The Houses of Parliament. Another interesting conference on the festival...
International Museum Day in Madrid

International Museum Day in Madrid

May is the month of the museums in Spain, and in Madrid they are celebrating this in style by offering two nights of free entry into the city’s museums. The traditional date for the Night of the Museum in Madrid is 15 May, to coincide with the feast day of this city’s patron saint, San Isidro. This year, however, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has proposed 14 May as the night for celebrating the event they have titled Museum and Memory. Madrid has decided to extend the occasion over both nights, thereby giving people more time to visit some museums and get a little closer to an important part of humanity’s heritage. As part of the event, ICOM have created a multimedia programme entitled “A Piece of the Story”, an attempt to share the fascinating history behind each museum’s collection. This will be published on the webpage of the European Museum Night. On this page you can also find information about the history of every museum that has sent their information to ICOM. Over the course of these two days, Madrid’s museums will stay open until 1 a.m., as well as running special programmes. There will be concerts, workshops, dancing, conferences and guided tours. Some museums are offering special programmes all week. One of these is the Museo Arqueológico Nacional (National Archaeological Museum) which offers guided tours on 18 May to show the links between the past and the present. El Templo de Debod (The Debod Temple) and la Biblioteca Nacional (The National Library) have also programmed special events for the occasion. Another venue that is fun and...
