The Ponte dell´Accademia (Accademia Bridge in English), is one of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal of the city and, for that, it has a special importance for the inhabitants of the city and the tourists, that come to see it and who want to cross it. The first bridge that went up where today there´s the current one, was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, in 1854. Then, the bridge was made of steel, but it never finished building because it had been fabricated with urgency to resolve communication problems, so they staged a competition to build a new one in the same place. This time they wanted that the bridge would be more resistant and splendorous. The competition was won by two Venetian architects, to fabricate it in stone, but the project was never made. The other bridges that cross the Grand Canal in Venice are: Ponte Rialto, Ponte degli Scalzi and the Ponte della Constituzione and, each one, has their own historical and cultural value for the city of the canals. In the 20th century, the bridge was ordered to build again, but not out of stone like they wanted to in the beginning, but made out of wood. It was inaugurated on January 15th 1933, although they later made remodelations and finally added steel to its structure so that it was more resistant.
