Radiohead in New York

Radiohead in New York

Once, because of the entry into the new millennium, making a review of popular 90s music, a prestigious British music critic referred to Radiohead´s album ´The Bends´ (1995) as “the best album of the decade”, but chose not to include its successor in time, the colossally acclaimed ´OK Computer´ (1997) in his list. When asked for the reasons of such clamorous omission, he answered that ´OK Computer´ was simply the best album of all time. Despite the magnitude of this hyperbole, and aside from any consideration towards the degree of truth that such a statement could have -music critics, just like philosophy, literature, art, science and any other creative activity, don´t bother with truth, as you should already know- it wasn´t particularly hard to understand in its true reach, due to its expressive and dramatic meaning. This was because it reflected the formidable impact that both albums had in the post-grunge era of rock music, just when signs of dominant reification were becoming apparent in the following years. Radiohead, who will offer a concert at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, five miles from New York, on the 1st of June (http://radiohead.com/tourdates/01-06-12_newark-nj) didn´t wish to be victims of their own unexpected success. Their albums, up until then, had described some sort of melancholic, reflective and critical sadness, borderline depressing and where lyricism and art offered all its resistant potential facing the havoc of an unjust political and social order, which was destroying the economy, dehumanizing life, plasticizing existence, heartbreak, the passing of time, death… Suddenly being turned into supermarket and elevator music, into stars of the show, in an acclaimed...

Rock in Rio Festival in Lisbon

Rock in Rio Festival in Lisbon

Since it was first held in 1985, Rock in Rio has managed to become the macrofestival pop-rock par excellence. Although there are many events like it spread around the whole world it has no equal in quality, capacity and organizational solvency, and  to such an extension that, given the tremendous impact they have had successive editions in Brazil, its organizer, the entrepreneur Roberto Medina, exported the formula to other countries (Spain, Argentina, Peru and Portugal). The first edition of the Rock in Rio-Lisbon took place in 2004, maintaining the same structure as the one in Brazil: a whole gigantic Rock City, with an area of over 200,000 m², equipped with a large central stage and several tents in which different artists perform simultaneously their music. One of the great attractions of this edition constitutes, no doubt, the fact of being located in what in other times would have called “a unique setting,” and today, simply, a magical city, full of charm, history, poetry. Walking through its streets, visit its cafes, its ancient tram ride before or after attending a concert in Rock in Rio, is not something that can be done elsewhere: only here in Portugal, in Lisbon. The appointment of Rock in Rio Lisbon has been repeated every two years, and we can say that 2012 edition will delight the spectators who come to the site with performances by front line artists, particularly on the 25th and 26th of May and from the 1st to the 3rd of  June. Among them, we should mention Bruce Springsteen with his E-Street Band, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, The Offspring and Limp Bizkit....
