Getting lost in Lisbon´s markets is always a pleasure. Getting lost in the labyrinths of fruit, vegetables, meats, fish, flowers, antiques… everything is possible! Here you will find some clues on where to buy the best local and regional products and eating a nice dish of cod at “home” (in an apartment with a kitchen) is a priceless experience. Here are two markets you can go to: the Mercado Da Ribeira and the Feira Da Labra, both with undeniable attraction for locals and tourists, because the world is a market. Da Ribeira food market A must for anyone who wishes to buy bags and bags of all the typical products of the city. Its location is privileged: on the shores of the river Tejo, and there you can buy fruit, vegetables, escargots, cakes, aromatic herbs, etc. It´s an ideal visit to get to know the local cuisine and its architecture is striking, a giant structure of steel and glass with plenty of light and colour, thanks to the flower stalls that stand side by side with the food ones. Where to eat vegetarian in Lisbon
Nowadays, eating vegetarian food is a very common thing. Many studies have confirmed that we actually don’t need to eat meat and that eating vegetarian food is great for our health and also for the environment. If you are wondering what is the population of vegetarians in the world, the answer is “not that many”. Apart of India, a country where vegetarianism is widespread (for religious reasons), the percentage of people that follow a vegetarian diet is 1%, and a small 0.1% of vegans. In total there are about 60 million of vegetarians in the world, which is rather a small percentage. The food market has realized about this reality and has used vegetarian products as a powerful marketing tool. All this to say that if you are going on vacation to Lisbon, which is not strictly vegetarian country, you will have no difficulty in finding a place to eat. Quioscos – Stalls full of Freshness
Usually we associate the word “kiosk” with varied meanings. One of the most common concerns places where they sell newspapers, magazines and even books. Some can even sell candy, cookies and treats. But in Lisbon, in its heart and other areas of this beautiful city, kiosks or “quioscos” have been recovered to refresh passersby with a wonderful array of delicious refreshments, cocktails and other treats for every taste. Located in squares and viewpoints, it is estimated that at least 40 have been adopted carefully keeping its traditional style. These kiosks were brought from France in the early twentieth century. It has a completely circular shape made of iron, and now work perfectly as a cafe or bar. This recovery, which was promoted by the city of Lisbon, has taken such a force that it has quickly become a meeting and visiting spot for lovers of outdoors and good life. a delicious natural juice, lemonade, even a beer or a full meat to a simple snack can be found. The All American Rejects in Lisbon
Alternative rock worldwide could not be in a worse state at the moment. Everything that sounded good on the radio is now just a memory. Back when there was still hope in rock, in its ability to change and the attitude on the radio, we were hit by the wave of musicians like Britney Spears, Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga simply because there isn’t any room in major mass media for good rock. In the nineties, the whole scene of indie rock and alternative exploded, and everybody knew about bands that were otherwise probably doomed to oblivion if it hadn’t been for Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and all the other bands that filled MTV with their “weird” sound during a time period dominated by the less popular hard rock and hair metal. After leaving the nineties, a war that left many dead or wounded and a lot collateral damage, we were sold another false hope: the Strokes. On July 30, 2001, just a few months after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, the group released their first album “Is This It,” which sent shockwaves through the rock world. Finally, good rock once again returned to MTV, videos, and daily life. Rock in Rio Festival in Lisbon
Since it was first held in 1985, Rock in Rio has managed to become the macrofestival pop-rock par excellence. Although there are many events like it spread around the whole world it has no equal in quality, capacity and organizational solvency, and to such an extension that, given the tremendous impact they have had successive editions in Brazil, its organizer, the entrepreneur Roberto Medina, exported the formula to other countries (Spain, Argentina, Peru and Portugal). The first edition of the Rock in Rio-Lisbon took place in 2004, maintaining the same structure as the one in Brazil: a whole gigantic Rock City, with an area of over 200,000 m², equipped with a large central stage and several tents in which different artists perform simultaneously their music. One of the great attractions of this edition constitutes, no doubt, the fact of being located in what in other times would have called “a unique setting,” and today, simply, a magical city, full of charm, history, poetry. Walking through its streets, visit its cafes, its ancient tram ride before or after attending a concert in Rock in Rio, is not something that can be done elsewhere: only here in Portugal, in Lisbon. The appointment of Rock in Rio Lisbon has been repeated every two years, and we can say that 2012 edition will delight the spectators who come to the site with performances by front line artists, particularly on the 25th and 26th of May and from the 1st to the 3rd of June. Defined by some as the representation of the Portuguese soul, this type of song was named as an Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO in 2011. Be careful because fado will drag you into the deepest part of your melancholy, taking you to the most unsettling corner of your soul through the humble events of everyday life sung with superlative feelings. There is no question about it, if you go to Lisbon you have to go and see fados sung live, whether it´s as the main act or an accompanying one while you have dinner or a drink in a bar.
