It seems indisputable that, since the beginning of the trend known as freak-folk, inaugurated with outstanding talents as Devendra Banhart (primarily responsible for the revaluation of the first album of Vashti Bunyan), CocoRosie and Joanna Newsom, one of the most sensitive and revolutionary projects of independent music of this century, that was born as the return to the presence of traditional, roots, folk. It´s like if somehow the tear characteristic of alternative music had been replaced by a deep melancholy lyrical that finds its best expression in traditional forms of music.
Reviewing the lists of the best music journals, the presence of the great works by artists like PJ Harvey, Bill Callahan, Gilliam Welsh, Fleet Foxes, Josh T Pearson, Bon Ivers, Wilco, Jonathan Wilson, The Jayhawks, and The Black Keys, to name just a few names, all of them in one way or another are directly related to traditional music, be it country, blues, folk and bluegrass.
More than one critic has associated this return to roots, with its varied, exciting and innovative twists- a need for truth and authenticity increasingly urgent in a world characterized by the increasing commodification of experience resulting from the use of dominant social networks and mass media. Truth and authenticity that would also have to do with the will and the urge to talk about things that have always care of (love, melancholy, longing, death, time …), this limited set of issues and metaphors are so limited that perhaps could loosely be counted with the fingers, which form infinite variations according to Borges the universe of human creation.
The highly recommended band The Sadies, which will provide an unforgettable concert at the Sidecar Factory Club in Barcelona on March 13
(http://www.sidecarfactoryclub.com/web/index.php?option=com_eventlist&Itemid=99999999&func=detailstip&did=2222 ), are perhaps a perfect example of this trend. Mainly oriented toward folk-rock with strong influences of country, there are several elements that make them special apart from their great songs. One of them is undoubtedly its relationship with Toronto, once again illustrative of that special, indefinable touch when Canadians approach to music that fits into the American label, noticeable in such diverse artists as Neil Young, The Cowboy Junkies, Basia Bulat or Leonard Cohen to name just a few examples. Another is its proximity to one of its most fertile and interesting post-punk, by their regular collaboration with artists such as Jon Spencer or Steve Albini.
And finally, in direct relation to the above are their striking, wild and spectacular concerts, enhanced by its particular sequined costumes and minimal ties, we wonder if you could forget about seeing them live, when you rent apartments in Barcelona
