During 2012, Helsinki will enjoy the honour of being the world design capital (http://wdchelsinki2012.fi/en), which is some sort of prize that, far from recognizing the merits of a specific individual, it focuses international attention in something of much more magnitude and reach, such as the impact of design in urban spaces, as well as in the citizens and the economy of the cities.
Helsinki, the Finnish capital traditional known as the ´daughter of the Baltic´ will therefore have, as well as its predecessors, the well-deserved chance to present its achievements and innovations in the field of industrial design, especially in what relates to its strive to support and attract the most advanced international creation in this field to itself, recognizing itself at the same time its work when having to develop different strategies of urban revitalization.
For over three years, the city has been preparing itself for the occasion, working on the outlines that defined its candidacy, an emphasis on the opening, continuity and cooperation of the multiple social dimensions of design that constitute the base of the wide range of activities.
Just like Finnish Art Nouveau manifested on its day, design and a certain conscience of the importance of it have always been particularly present in the country´s lifestyle, opting for its possibilities in the future without abstaining from appreciating and respecting its traditions.
From that respect, perhaps the most striking characteristic in the way that Helsinki undertakes its title of capital resides in a firm choice for the role that sustainable design has to play in present and future societies. In this sense, the organizers aspire that the programmed events inspire a dialogue surrounding the ways in which design can be used to improve people´s lifestyles, since it´s for them that design exists, making it more functional and simple.
In this context, perhaps the most outstanding thing is the insistence the programmed events, escaping any pompous and megalomaniac temptation of effects that are as spectacular as they are short-lived, are as open and transparent -reflecting the idea that the city wants to transmit: an open place where ideas, thoughts and people can move around freely due to the absence of unnecessary obstacles for creativity- as possible, offering the citizen different ways to actively participate in the development of his vital surroundings and getting him involved in the processes of decision making that affect the area where he lives.
Hence that the more than 250 projects that make up the programme, the most important and numerous (approximately half) are related to the theme areas of ´Transforming the city´ and ´New Solutions´.
Making visible the role of design and contributing to the construction of a pleasant and welcoming urban culture through it is the aim of the organizers. Enjoy such a seductive proposal when you rent apartments in Helsinki
