Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Deyneka born in Moscow in 1899. He studied at the Kharkov Art College, being a pupil of Alexander Lubimov, the founding member of the OST and Oktiabr artist groups. His early drawings and paintings were made in black and white, caused much speculation and curiosity about the peculiarity of his work; however, this option was related to the shortage of materials.

His prolific work includes large mosaic murals as the one at Mayakovskaya station in the Moscow metro. His monumental paintings such as The Defense of Petrograd and the Battle of Sebastopol are the most representative from one stage of his work. He received the Decoration of the Order of Lenin and the Order Red Flag of Labor.

The Russian avant-garde was one of the most dynamic in Europe in the early twentieth century. Artists, architects, filmmakers, poets, philosophers and all kinds of thinkers and artists joined the movement, which interacted in the midst of a political debate that triggered the October Revolution.

The revolution and subsequent political processes caused, initially a subordinateto the revolutionary urgencies, finally succumbed to Stalinism and the creation of a hegemonic culture that comes from the current political power. Stalin was the power that prevailed the current of socialist realism, where art and all cultural expressions are to be subjected to uplift and strengthen the personality of leaders.

This exhibition makes a journey to all that period from the front and the process that transforms the revolutionary art, an art in the service of a “revolution.” The particularity of Deneika is, that his work transcends all these influences and remains a fascinating aesthetic of freedom that went beyond hegemonic impositions.
