Autumnal landscapes in Europe: Krakow, Ljubljana and Toulouse

There are cities that get indescribably charming when the autumn comes. Some of those cities, like Krakow, get loaded with intense colors forming a very particular combination of dyes, which could even get creepy if you imagine for a second the dyed brown and gray colors around the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps (very near Krakow).

It is a treat to stroll the streets of Ljubljana right after the end of the summer. Another city that you can visit this fall is Toulouse; do you want to know why? Keep reading.

The gray dyes of Auschwitz and Birkenau , Krakow

Poland still smells of concentration camps and gray dyes, which actually become more intense when autumn arrives. A few kilometers from Krakow, you’ll find two of the biggest former Nazi camps in the world Auschwitz and Birkenau. The landscape is quite dark; you could feel the pain and smell the desperation of the ones that once inhabited these places. When autumn comes, some weird feelings can attack you. It is certainly an unforgettable and very important place to visit and learn (so something like this does not happen again).  Visiting the barracks where the victims of the terrible Holocaust were clogged, the gas chambers, the crematoria and even the railway on which trains came full of prisoners, is a unique experience. I can assure you that being there, will give you goosebumps. These camps have become a museum to remember a cruel period of history that we hope will never happen again.

The ocher dyes in Ljubljana, Slovenia

When summer ends, colors tend to change rapidly; greens are transformed into brown, trees lose their leaves while turning yellow and orange. This is inevitable anyways no matter where you are, but in Ljubljana you’ll see a greater contrast. The forests spring- summer fluorescent green is transformed into a powerful, almost golden, ocher. It is a pity that the Slovenian capital is not well known, because the ones that visit it compare it to Amsterdam, because of its canals, with Prague, because of its elegant architecture and with Salzburg because of its young atmosphere. The truth is that Ljubljana is a very charming city split in two by the river Ljubljanica and adorned everywhere by beautiful monuments. I recommend you to visit the castle, the Bridge of Dragons, the old town and its medieval churches, which make the city specially attractive in winter, spring, summer and fall. Moreover, you should pay a visit to a small fairy-tale-town called Kamnik, located on the outskirts of the capital.

The rose dyes in Toulouse , France

Toulouse has about half a million inhabitants and moves around its two most precious jewels: the pinkish Capitole and the Garonne River, which, by the way, rises in Spain. Between Montpellier and Bordeaux, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, Toulouse is a transit stop for Europeans who decide to do the famous Camino de Santiago. There you’ll find a perfect fusion between party and culture, as well as history and modernity.
