Where to eat the best hummus in Tel Aviv

Even though hummus doesn´t come from Israel but Lebanon instead, being consumed especially in countries like Palestine, Turkey, Greece, Syria, Armenia and Cyprus, the truth is that it´s a big part of the Israeli gastronomy and lifestly.

It´s as commonplace to find this dish on the dinner table as it is to find your children sitting at it. In other words, it´s like a salad would be in western Europe. It can be used as a side dish, to share or as a main course.

It´s made from chick peas (which is actually what hummus means), sesame seed paste, a few drops of lemon juice and garlic. However, the recipe varies depending on where you are.

You will have probably tried hummus at some point in your life, whether it´s in your corner kebab shop or at your hippy friend´s dinner gathering. However, the clear thing is that good food gets exported and that´s how hummus reached us. Even so, as you probably know, nothing is as good as it is in its country of origin. If you don´t believe that, ask the Italians who makes the best pasta, the Japanese who makes the best sushi or the people from Valencia who makes the best paella. It´s the same thing: if you want to eat the proper hummus, you have to do so in one of the aforementioned countries. In this case, we´re going to talk about Tel Aviv. And not just talk about it but in fact give you the three best places where you can eat all the hummus you want.

Hummus Abu Adham

In this place, that opened in 2003, they just serve hummus, which you can accompany with your chips and/or salad. However, it´s one of the most authentic places, which means you´ll most likely find locals there (a good sign!). Here, they only focus on their hummus… so perhaps the toilets might disappoint you a bit. Another point in its favour: if you´re still hungry after your first serving, you get a second one for free!

Address: Carlebach Street, 7 Tel: 03 562 5051

Humus Ashcara

A Tel Aviv classic that has been preparing hummus for over 30 years, so you can trust that it´s going to be good. The salads are also delicious and so is the pitta bread that goes with it. Also, it´s very clean and it´s in the cool Yirmiyahu district.

Find it on Irmiyahoo Street 45, Tel Aviv 62594, Israel

Mashawa

This place has earned its reputation due to their hard work: they mash the chick peas every time someone orders to hummus, so it´s as fresh as can be. Also, they serve it hot (another variant, since it´s usually served cold). Even though it´s a bit special, the locals say it´s the best hummus in Israel. They also make delicious pitta bread, so we hope you will go there and give us some feedback.

It´s on Pinsker Street, 40  Tel: 03 629 3796
