Columbus Circle Fountain is one of the most beautiful and commemorative monuments in the city of New York. It was a gift from the Italians to the Americans in the 19th century in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America.
You can see in the great statue of Cristopher Columbus that rises on the tip of the fountain, that he´s standing straight in front of the world with an air of conquest on his face. The column that holds it is built in granite and has insertions of bronze. These small metal sculptures are: the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María, the three ships with which he arrived to the American territory for the first time in 1492.
The designer and creator of this wonderful monument is the Italian artist Gaetano Russo and the work becamse famous for the first time in 1965 with a public act of inauguration.
