The Museo de América holds an incredible collection of over 25 thousand artifacts that come, above all, from Central and South America although there are also some from the North. The collection was moved to the current building in 1962 after having belonged to the Museo Arqueológico Nacional (National Archeological Museum).
The majority of art that is in the place is from a pre-Columbine period and shows the lifestyle that people had in that time and, also, the technological and scientific advances that allowed the Spanish to get to America at that time.
The exhibitions describe the different societies that occupied the continent from prehistoric times, its myths, beliefs and ways of life.
There´s a room that presents the different forms of communication that the indians had, how they used them and what language they had which has been lost today and are now dead languages. One of the most important objects is a really colourful feather costume that was used in ritual ceremonies by the Karajá indians in Brasil, who currently, are in danger of becoming extinct.
If you like history and want to get to know objects that belonged to ancestral civilizations you can get Madrid accommodations and visit the Museo de América.
