Botes i Potes: Walking Your Dog in Barcelona

Dogs are our best friends. They accompany us through thick and thin, give us affection and warmth as well as provide us company. Many times when we talk about people’s personalities we compare them to a dog or cat. Are you cat or dog? What makes you cat or dog? Well if you’re a cat you usually like being alone, you´re dominant, you don’t accept too much affection from others, and you’re not willing to commit yourself much. You´re above the rest, your ego is stronger than you, there´s nobody better than you – well, that’s at least what goes through your head. This definition may sound like an exaggeration, so maybe it’s better to say that a person with cat character is more independent and aloof. If your character is more affectionate or dependent on the affection of loved ones, maybe your behavior is closer to that of the dog. The adjective that defines dogs is usually loyalty. Sometimes, we have the feeling that our dogs are too attached to us. They want to be there all the time to make us happy or simply wishing to keep us company, even when we don’t want it. For some people, the company of a dog can be even suffocating. However, the joyous reaction of a dog when you come home is indescribable to others. It’s also about their manner of accompanying us and giving us affection. Always ready to run or walk or simply go outside, dogs are great best friends when you’re the outdoorsy type, whether you like going to the park, down the street, to the beach,...

UB40 concert in Barcelona

Reggae music is usually associated with the use of marijuana, that is, the image of aperson who listens to reggae is someone extremely relaxed, who does nothing with his life, who smokes marijuana all the time and usually has “dreadlocks” and does not shower. He or she usually is a squatter in some European city. Comfortable clothes, comfortable attitude, and a unpretentious stylistic intent far beyond the hippie philosophy. Reggae lovers around the world spread between marijuana smoke, happiness, love and peace. And of course, surf, beaches, cosmic sunsets and vegetarian food. A peaceful and carefree life, moving in slow motion indulging the pleasures of cannabis. This however is a very common stereotype that people often associate this style with as they do with other styles of popular music to explain the character of those who hear it. For example, it is considered that people who listen to heavy metal are  violent people, embittered with the world, that hate everything and most likely will be Satanists and devil worshipers sacrificing cats in the basement of their home. Stereotypes. Prejudices are common mistakes. Usually, we create stereotypes when we have fear of the unknown, of that what we do not know how to explain. So, reggae is also loaded with prejudices but, likewise, reggae is heard by managers of large companies, doctors, police officers in the demonstrations, political activists, dancers, poets, firefighters, office workers, people who work every day in front to a computer writing articles about travel and tourism, and is more than probable that the King of Spain heard reggae when hunting killing elephants. Reggae has no boundaries...

Friendly Fires in Concert in Barcelona

What happened to the true indie scene? Many people are asking themselves this question every day after finding that the current music market has become increasingly restricted and industrialized. At a crucial moment, the “indie” scene has changed into a closed industry with short parameters and as little ambition as possible. Pitchfork is now the web page that defines the interest of thousands of teenagers and young “alternative” people throughout the world. If Pitchfork is in line with your approach to music, chances are you have had access to the well-established indie media. InSpain, the magazine and website Rockdelux continues to be an inevitable reference for finding out what music is “in” and what is “out”. Many more magazines that hold the office of spokesperson for “alternative rock” include The Deli, Prefix, Under the Radar, among others. Indie rock today is not the same as it used to be. Twenty years ago, when alternative rock was fresh, when the war between corporate rock still alive, and when it was not something for the masses, there weren’t any resources to share music and knowledge like we have today. Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr – all of these tools that any internet user has available are also used by large music corporations. The intersection of these means of dissemination generates what seems like a conflict within the center of independent music: honesty, talent, rebellion. These are all becoming more and more distant. Apparently, the use of social networks only makes independent music that much more a product of the internet, which is then interspersed with “mainstream” music and then doesn’t have...

Love Barcelona!

All my friends coming to visit me in Barcelona always say: “One of the best times to visit Barcelona is between April and June.” When you leave your apartments in Barcelona, the nice temperature of 16 ° C at 9 am, brighten up the faces of everybody you see walking on the street. The sun is just perfect and is a great time to sit in any of the terraces that hug the streets of Barcelona for breakfast. A “mini” is what often accompanies the traditional coffee with milk, a small piece of bread filling of any Iberian ham. They do not usually exceed 4 €. After that you can go walking anywhere in the city. The streets smell of the flowers hanging from every balcony, the sun illuminates every corner and street of the city, and a slight breeze reminds you that the sea is very close, and you will find it at a stone’s throw. In Barcelona you have art, culture, design, fashion, trends, exhibitions, literature, architecture, music, party, cuisine and especially the locals. Warm people that even though can’t really speak English, will always recommend you their favorite restaurant or indicate you how to get anywhere using the subway. Barcelona is a very special city that has something that makes you fall in love with it.   Alemateo87 There are so many friends who want to visit Barcelona with the excuse to see me, that I can’t host them all in my apartment. The best option is to rent any one of the apartments in Barcelona...

Markets in Barcelona

As a city on the Mediterranean coast and because of the natural routes connecting it with the interior since Roman times, Barcelona has always been a great commercial city. The market has been an important factor in the city’s development to date and thus, becoming an important part of the Catalan economy as well. There is evidence that the first organized market here was held at a spot outside the city walls, where the Plaza de Angel currently stands, at the end of the 10th century. Then others began to appear for the exchange of goods, such as el Born or la Boqueria, going through a great evolution from the Middle Ages until the 19th century, reflecting the various changes in society. The markets we know today are essentially the result of thousands of years of history. And in both their appearance and rationality, they are a legacy left to us by the cast-iron architecture, a classification that arose during the 19th century when the modern city was being built. The buildings at the time had metal skeletons covered with glass that had monumental proportions large interiors. The first covered market was the Mercado de Santa Caterina from 1844. But the first purely modernist market to be conceived was Mercado del Born. It was followed by the Mercado de la Llibertat de Gracia (1875) and many more with the same characteristics, such as Sant Antoni (1882), and the ones located at la Barceloneta (1884), la Concepció and Hostafrancs (1888) as well as those at Clot, (1889), Gràcia, and la Abaceria (1892). Some of these were part of structured communities, making them vitally important for the sustainable growth...

Lenny Kravitz in Barcelona

Lenny Kravitz’s appearance on the music scene was like no other. His entrance into international pop rock took place back in 1989 with his album “Let Love Rule”, now more than 20 years ago. Since then Kravitz has maintained the interest of international audiences with his songs and style. Winner of several international awards and Grammys, Kravitz’s history began inUpper Manhattan, where he grew up with his parents, who were involved in the entertainment industry of theU.S.As the story goes, Kravitz’s parents always supported his interest in being a part of the music industry. At first he wanted to play drums, which started when he was barely four years old, drumming loudly on pots and pans in their kitchen. After moving toLos Angelesat the age of 10, Lenny Kravitz discovered important bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd, among others, which have influenced his style of rock and stage presence. After the recording of “Let Love Rule” back in the late 80s, several record companies fought to obtain this young talent, who was full of attitude, and above all, his sound that mixed R&B, blues, rock, funk and pop. “Too white to be black, too black to be white” was one way the music press described his work, and this was no doubt his success to conquering the global market. At the time, Lenny Kravitz was a clear example that the best art is always on the sidelines and a mix of different styles and references, while at the same time original. One can recall that Kravitz was presented as the direct heir of Jimi Hendrix. Not...

Absinthe in Barcelona

Among all the beverages in the world, there is probably no other that has a so admirable and awe legend as the absinthe, traditionally called the green fairy in reference to both, its emerald color when it reaches the perfect distillation, in no case less than seventy degrees, and the magical world that it gives access to, an altered state of consciousness as fertile, active and potentially frightening that can lead you either to heaven or to hell. That is why for the second romanticism, modernism and the symbolist movements, it became the drink par excellence, while leaving countless evidence of which there are testimonies in both, literature and painting of the last third of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth century in the work of artists like Rimbaud and Verlaine to Oscar Wilde, Van Gogh to Picasso, until it was banned in 1915 on behalf of public health to save citizens from the dangerous and aberrant hallucinations that apparently only this beverage was capable of causing , something that was seen significantly more important than protecting them from the dangerous and abhorrent realities that those authorities had no qualms of prohibitionist fed through a war of unprecedented destructive power at that time, and which was proven to devastate chilling impact beyond the words. There have never been enough words to adequately define the experience of drinking absinthe despite having been described countless times every single detail of its ceremony, also memorably represented in painting and in film. Due to its high ethyl content, you should place a teaspoon at the bottom of a glass...

Titanic The Exhibition in Barcelona

A story that touches thousands of people in the world, first for being real and secondly and more importantly, because it reminds us that, even though sometimes we believe, we are strong and invulnerable, we are only human, who make mistakes in a world in which we are just one specie among many others, which constantly reminds us of nature. This is the story of the Titanic, the largest and most luxurious ship in the world during the early twentieth century, the protagonist of one of the most instructive tragedies of human history. It was in 1911 when the famous ship first touched the sea, after two years of construction, which was not completed after a year of being “thrown”. It was so advertised the safety of the new “monster” of the seven seas in many media of the time described it as “impossible to sink”. Unfortunately nature had different plans, which helped by the bad maneuver of a captain so-convinced of the titanic, led the ship to eventually brake in half the ship, while taking over 1500 people. Titanic the Exhibition, reconstructs step by step the life of the ship, while telling visitors its history through real objects, maps, charts of the time, as well as pieces of the ship and most importantly, personal belongings of the passengers, both deceased and the survivors,  gathered in recent testimonies recorded after many years. Also, there are press releases that show the impact that caused the accident in the society, as well as recreations of the most luxurious ship. The exhibition, which is already in the Barcelona Maritime Museum, will be...

Goya Exhibition in Barcelona

The work of Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), who almost unanimously is regarded as one of the most important and influential painters of all time, is inevitably associated with Madrid, where not only some of the most famous painting scenes happened, but also because it remains the largest and most significant part of his work. Since Delacroix It is not unusual the pilgrimage of artists from around the world to the Prado Museum to study the Spanish master in depth, at this prestigious Museum in Madrid, which is little less than a Goya museum itself. This close association with the capital of Spain comes, apart from the astonishing quality of the extraordinary works part of the exhibition Goya. Lights and shadows at CaixaForum Barcelona until the 24th of June(http://obrasocial.lacaixa.es/nuestroscentros/caixaforumbarcelona/goya_es.html) as a way to commemorate its tenth anniversary. This is also the first of four major exhibitions in close collaboration with the Prado Museum in Madrid, La Caixa plans to organize over the next four years. Although the exhibition doesn’t have the ambition to be exhaustive, because inevitably there will be a number of masterpieces missing, the fact is that with over a hundred pieces carefully selected the exhibition, people can give a quick glance at all the artist´s career, both as extraordinarily rich on topics and issues (self-portraits, portraits and portraits of court with chilling power of psychological insight, daily-routine scenes and festive, historical scenes of large quasi-documentary, disillusioned and bitter reflections, social criticism and allegations of war …) treated in a very...
