Punk concert: Sum 41 in Lisbon
One of the most famous punk bands in the world is, undoubtedly, Sum 41. The grouping from Ajax, Ontario, is active since ´96 and its current members are Deryck Whibley (voice and rhythm guitar), Jason McCaslin (who is on bass and the voices of the choir), Steve Jocz (drums, vocals) and Tom Thacker (lead guitar, keyboard and chorus). In ´99 the band started to become famous after signing a contract with record label Island Records and after presenting a series of singles that positioned them well in the punk scene they released their first CD called “All Killer No Filler “In 2001. But the moment they became famous and ceased to be an little underground band was undoubtedly when they wrote and submitted the song “Fat Lip”, the first single from their first LP. That song reached the top of the Modern Rock Billboard chart and remained to this day the most famous of the group. “All Killer No Filler” reached platinum status in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom and from that moment Sum 41 released three new albums: “Does This Look Infected?” “Chuck” and “Underclass Hero”, which all went platinum in Canada. The group performs more than 300 times per year and they go on very long tours around the globe, most of the time they last longer than a year. Queer film festival Lisbon
Queer Lisbon is one of the largest film festivals in Europe. This year marks its 14th edition and which will once again bring interesting audiovisual contributions to the city which deal with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, transgender or queer movement related themes. Films will be shown in Sao Jorge from 17 until 25 September, and apart from the projection of over 100 movies, there will be various events and festivals promoting the LGBT spirit. The festival will award contributions in three categories: documentary, fiction and short films – the latter, chosen by the public. In “Queer Art” proposals will be shown for experimental cinema and documentaries on queer artists, while “Queer Pop” is dedicated to investigate the intersections between music and queer culture. “Leo´s Room” is one of the most interesting contributions to this year´s festival. This debut film of Uruguayan director Enrique Buchichio is a shrewd portrait of Leo, a young boy in the process of self-acceptance and sexual definition. We embark on an intimate story which traces the protagonist´s emotional topography, as is reflected in the many interiors in which this sensitive story takes place. The plot unfolds when the paths of Leo and Caro, a former classmate he liked in the past, end up crossing paths again in unexpected ways. Winner of last year’s prize, Roberto Castón´s “Ander” tells the story of a homosexual in his 40´s in an innovative way, depicting the protagonist in a rural area and offers an atypical variation from the norm of Spanish gay films, which are usually set in an urban environment. How to overcome the complexes
Today´s society enslaves us with unattainable canons of aesthetic and cultural perfection. The media and advertising broadcast a message highly toxic to the mortals’ morale, so full of “defects”: spare tyres, crooked teeth, low salary, lack of culture… This way, it’s quite normal that people have many complexes. The problem is almost always the image that one has of himself is very different from what others see, and almost always it is much more negative. A complex is the focus of a real or imagined defect, physical or psychological. The person who has many complexes has a distorted image of himself. There are different kinds of complexes, but the most common are the physical ones, particularly among women. Although there are also the psychological complexes which are increasing more and more, due to a lack of culture or intelligence; and the social complexes, having to do with the scope of money, profession or origins. The low self-esteem is the main factor triggering a complex. Learning how to live with them is vital. How? Resort to positive psychology. According to the experts, the need of approval from others should be replaced by self esteem. We should accept ourselves! It is better to boast of the virtues, than to humble focusing only on the defects. We all have complexes because it is part of the human condition. Nobody´s perfect. Without a doubt, the best solution is the acceptance of our imperfections. One must be realistic and see how far one can go.
