Chicago the Musical in New York

‘Chicago’ is one of the musicals that´s been on Broadway for the longest period of time. The musical was written by the journalist Maureen Dallas Watkins in 1924 and it was adapted in the 70s for a musical adaptation. Dallas Watkins began to write it after covering the trial of the murderers Beulah Annan and Belva Gaetner for the Chicago Tribune, achieving huge popularity with her chronicles on the sordidness of this story of lust, violence, corruption and adultery that had attractive elements for a theatre play, which took her to write one. The story reached the hands of Gwen Verdon, who read it and saw the potential it had for a music, asking her husband, Bob Fosse, to produce it. Fosse quickly became interested and asked Dallas Watkins to authorize an adaptation, without managing to convince her despite his insistence on various occasions. In 1969, after the death of the journalist, Verdon and Fosse were left with the rights and finally managed to produce the musical. Fred Ebb and John Kander worked on the music sheet and on the script and gave it the vaudeville style that was required for a musical, emphasising on a very interesting aspect that highlighted the central conflict of the play: the outlook on justice and showbiz in contemporary society. The musical premiered in 1975 with great expectations and it received mixed critics and ut stayed on until 1977. In 1996 it was premiered once again with new adaptations which brought even more public. The bare scenography and the amount of public it had meant that the musical recovered all the investment in...

Returning to Vintage in Barcelona

Vintage is neither a fashion nor a trend. It’s more of an attitude: the knowledgeable look beyond novelty and are able to recognize the quality and beauty of certain older objects. While collectors seek very valuable items and don’t take a second look at relics or antiques, the vintage aficionado or those who up to now have not gotten to know this terrain, aspire to recycle something from yesterday, incorporating into contemporary life. If we concentrate simply on fashion, it seems that certain successful series such as the award-wining “Mad Men” have contributed to the return of this attitude and also a characteristic way of dressing. An example of this trend can be seen in the revival of “New Look” (after some 60 years) which was first seen in works by Christian Dior from the 50s. Full skirts with tight waists and mid-calf lengths and tailored jackets were all the rage among the elegant women of yesterday as much as among the celebrities today. At the same time as this reinterpretation, fashion addicts are going crazy to have bags that are emblematic of the 50s and 60s, especially those of crocodile and alligator skin. The Lucille de Paris label (which has been active since the 70s in New York), to name but one example, reflect this, as the price for a bag rarely goes below 250 dollars. If a bag (all of them are handbags) is found to be in good condition, it could easily be worth 500 dollars. Although Spain doesn’t have a vintage tradition, Penélope Cruz walked down the red carpet at the Oscars in 2009 (where...

Concerts in New York

BAM Cafe in New York This story began 150 years ago in a place set apart from what was then still known as the New World. There, in a port city filled with skyscrapers, in a neighborhood known for its bohemians and excellent artists, in an old abandoned building, the BAM Cafe was born as the meeting place of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. There were men of action, speakers and artists, especially artists, from all possible genres. At first they came from all over the city and later from all around the globe. The crowd intensified as various events took place, so the promoters of the event were forced to find a new space that would be larger and more suited to their needs. It is now housed in the Lafayette Avenue, the heart of Brooklyn, offering much more than just theaters. Included in this scene were dancers from the other side of the Ocean such as the suggestive Isadora Duncan (that was back in 1908) or Russian Nureyev (some decades later, in 1962). The charismatic president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who brought the United States out of the Great Depression with his “New Deal”, also spoke to his fellow citizens at the theater in 1940, when there were some 6,000 people who were content to listen to him from outside on the street. “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” With the name “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”, a series of concerts with music of all genres will be given over the course of three days. BAM though overlaps one act with another and will be hosting additional events such as a work of...

Red Hot Chili Peppers in New York

There are bands that we forget about for a while and that we think that they´re finished. Suddenly they surprise us with a new album and, more importantly, another unforgettable tour from a band with so much history and legendary songs such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are back with a tour around Europe and North America that will satisfy their fans. They will travel to Europe on June 26th and will return to their homeland in November 2012. Two of the most highly-awaited concerts will take place on the 4th and 5th of May at Prudential Center, New Jersey, south of New York City. The new album that they´re going to present is called ´I´m With You´, and it has been brewing and previewing since 2011. Before this, due to their 2 year break, rumours were going around that the legendary band were going to split up because their guitarist John Frusciante had announced that he was leaving the band and although at first no substitute was announced, they named Josh Klinghoffer as Frusciante´s replacement, who would also be on piano and chorus as well as guitar. With the band rolling once again, their return to the stages was announced to present their new album, called ´I´m With You´, with a homonymous tour that started in Bogotá, Colombia, in September 2011. ´The Adventures of Raindance Maggie´, one of their singles, quickly rose to #1 and finally, the album was released in August 2011 and with songs such as ´Monarchy of Roses´ one can say that it was worth the way. ´I´m With You´ is the band´s...

Harlem Globetrotters in Istanbul

It Will be on May 5 at 6 pm in the Ülker Sports Arena, in the beautiful Barbaros Boulevard in Istanbul, when this particular basketball team, the Harlem Globetrotters, will give one of its famous exhibitions, halfway between sports, dance and comedy show. But who are these guys that form the Harlem Globetrotters? Well, first we should note that they are not from New York or Harlem. The team is based in Chicago. The name was changed to make it more attractive, hooking up with this peculiar American neighborhood so popularized by basketball and urban dance. And these two arts are part of the Harlem Globetrotters, a sports team that steps on the basketball court not to play (although it does) a game, but to amuse the audience with their bodily skills, friendliness and tricks with the ball. The Harlem Globetrotters are so well known in the U.S. that they have become almost an institution and all you have to do is to take a look at their official website with reviews of for example, the traditional visit to the White House every Holy Thursday, which also current president, Barack Obama, in the wake of some of his predecessors, likes to enjoy this unique basketball team. And speaking of the political flagship of the United States of America, it seems that serious vice president Henry Kissinger was pretty amused with the Harlem Globetrotters. We assume that somehow or another, during his travels abroad, he promoted the show. Whatever it was he did, as well as the late Pope John Paul II he earned a honorific membership. Istanbul´s game is part...

M83 in New York

From the Côte d´Azur, from the beautiful town of Antibes, we get the music of this band that was born over ten years ago and that have six albums in their history. As part of the world tour of their latest album, ´Hurry up, We´re Dreaming´, they land in New York, at Terminal 5 NYC, on the 10th of May. M83 at Terminal 5 NYC Anthony Gonzalez (French of Spanish heritage) and Nicolas Fromegeau have known how to position their electronic music thanks to the repeated broadcastings on BBC Radio and the evocative power of their songs, which have been the headlining song for many TV series and films. If the reader wants to find out which ones, he just has to see the promotional video of their latest single, ´Midnight City´. Here the music goes brilliantly with the staging of the official video where some children with paranormal powers search for freedom. It´s no surprise that they´ve hit the 10 million mark on YouTube with this song. Terminal 5 NYC, on 610 West 56th Street, between 11th and 12th Avenue, is the youngest concert venue of New York City. However, its programme is incredible. It´s located close to the Western entry to Central Park although, as you know, we´re in New York and three avenues one way or another is quite a walk. It has events on every day and they also organize private activities on demand. The M83 concert has already sold all the early bird tickets so you will just have to buy the ticket on the day of the concert. It will be at 8pm...

Patrick Wolf in Istanbul

Patrick Wolf There´s not a lot to say about this unique musician (for the conjunction of his adult ways, his exquisite music and his boyish face, since he´s only in his 20s) that hasn´t been said in forums of the Web 2.0. We´re facing one of the musical revelations of the 21st century and we have to go on this premise. Wolf´s songs, since the singer has gone through regulated studies with conservatory masters due to his chaotic child education, show not only a rebel spirit but also the child prodigy that still lives on inside him. The singer/songwriter, after the scare that he gave his fans on the social networks in 2007 saying that he was retiring, is back with a new album with a title which is as suggestive as it is revealing: ´Lupercalia´, bringing back the love of the wolf, the blood and the animal-human transformations that were announced in his first album, ´Lycanthropy´ (2003). ´Lupercalia´ And what importance does the name of his fifth album have? Well, quite a bit actually because it´s a reference to pagan festivals of adult life initiation. Allow me to explain it better. During the early centuries of the Roman Empire, every 15th of February, rites of passage were celebrated in which the young hunting victors, after smearing themselves with animal blood and with the consent of the priests of the temple, entered civil life as adults with fill rights, with all the prerogatives and duties that being an adult brought. In those festivals they sacrificed dogs (the same ones we can see on the album cover) and goats, and they prayed...

Florence and The Machine in New York

On May 8 as part of an intensive tour all over the United States, at the famous Radio City Music Hall in New York, the unmistakable voice of Florence Welch accompanied with her band will delight all her fans. This green-eyed redhead has landed in the international music scene with all honors, following the rapid release of her debut album “Lungs”, in 2009, occupying the top spot on the bestseller lists. She is now on stage with her new work, “Ceremonials”. Florence Welch But let´s go step by step. Behind the name of Florence and The Machine or Florence + The Machine (the stylized version) lives, breathes and sings a young British artist by the name of Florence Welch, who is accompanied by her own band. Tom Monger, on harp, Christopher Lloyd Hayden, on drums, Alex Herrera, on guitar, Isabella Summers, on keyboards and bass player, Mark Saunders are the “machine”,  that make recordings and play concerts backing Welch´s voice. A voice that is defined as sweet, at par, strong, this artist holds high rankings in all the privileged lists in world, including the magazine “Rolling Stone”. Contemporary muse for women, she is rising as the female voice who demands a way to understand and sings with conviction about today´s world. And nothing else is to be said than to read the flattering review of her concert on Women´s Day, March 8, which appeared in “The Observer” three days later and signed by an enthusiastic Kitty Empire that did not hesitate to recognize that she vibrated with the music and staging of Welch. The Florence + The Machine International...

International Comic Book Fair in Barcelona

For 30 years, Barcelona has been the home of the International Comic Book Fair, an event where fans of the ninth art can come and see all the editorial novelties as well as the authors of the comic books, so they can take back a signed copy or even a dedicated drawing by one of their favourite cartoonists.  After going through various locations, the fair is now located at the Fira de Barcelona, and this year it will take up Pavillion 8, which is over 4 acres big, where the different publishers will present their latest publications, together with the bookshops that exhibit their material. Also, they will organize various presentations of authors, both Spanish and international ones, who will attend the event to show their latest work to the Spanish crowd. As well as the authors presented by the publishers and the organization of the fair, it´s easy to find other cartoonists and scriptwriters who will go there by themselves to this event, the most important comic book fair in Spain. This year, the American cartoonists Greg Rucka and Greg Capullo as well as the British ones David Lloyd and Mark Buckingham and the Italian Milo Manara will be attending, along with the Chinese ones that have been invited there since China is the invited country to this year´s edition. Famous sci-fi film and TV actors  will also visit the fair, such as Julian Glover (The Empire Strikes Back) or Paul Blake, who played Greedo in Star Wars. The seven exhibitions, as well as the one dedicated to comic books in China, are dedicated to the robots in comic books, making the most of Go Nagai´s presence, the creator of Mazinger Z. Spider Man will also be there...
