James Morrison Concert in Barcelona

James Morrison is not Jim Morrison. Jim Morrison was a drug addict and drunk fiend, the teenage girl terror in California. Jim Morrison was James Douglas Morrison, a young American of a rather broad intelligence and vivid curiosity. With an army of readings ranging from medieval demonology, philosophy, Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Rimbaud and Marshall McLuhan and his “Civilization of Show”, Jim Morrison prepared a singular cocktail during the 60´s and next to The Doors, change the rules of live music, music not only with a certainly fabulous talented band, but also in the way to confront the public during a live performance, the strengths and weaknesses of advertising pop stars, film and of course, mass media. The Doors were like a trigger in a turbulent period of crisis, of war, there was still much to discover in the trenches of pop. Morrison, Jim James, was a kind of comet that left a trail whose light remains to this day, with many lessons yet to be learn or relearn. And we´re not talking about the stupid myth, we are talking about the actions performed on stage. Period. We must recognize that the dynamics of pop music have changed dramatically over the last thirty years. The danger of a pop band or a pop singer that has been tamed even further by the market is questionable . The public itself is responsible for the taming of its stars, that is the public that also has become complacent and unwilling to see their stars burn, they prefer to keep them, put them on the Iphone. Surely, there will not be another...

Antoni Tapies: In Memoriam in Barcelona

How do we confront the death of an artist? Because death is an everyday event, inherent to human nature, our culture, our material condition on earth. We are all willing to die, eventually, that we do not like death, that is for sure, but it is inevitable, as a poet once said its the reason in the first instance for being born. However an artist´s death shakes us further, especially if he has been of such importance, if his work has transcended into the hearts and minds of many people. Perhaps art is just that hard race against death, looking for ways to fix life in any way, any shape that is possible, a bond in order to perpetuate life on Earth. It sounds very romantic and “cliché”, but somehow we all findd a refuge in art of the everyday, an outlet to rebel ourselves, to think deeply and differently. A true artist summons these forces into one and takes us further than we ever thought, they takes us out of our small world and shakes us. Antoni Tapies was one of those artists. Tapies was born in Barcelona in 1923 into a middle class family. After suffering lung disease, his interest in reading would increase even more, and he spend time devoted to drawing and painting. Later, and without thinking about it too much, he would leave his law studies for art so he can devote to it completely. During the forties he already was exhibiting his work and received recognition from specialized critics which up until today, continues as present as ever in all media. The story...

Simple Plan in Rome

The beginnings of North American hardcore took place in different areas in the United States. California was one of its centres at the beginning of the 80s with bands such as Blag Flag, leading a whole new scene of hardcore punk. However, little is remembered about the two guys from Washington DC who were childhood friends (and still are today) who went to a Ramones concert with some school friends and after being so shocked from the impressive New York band, dressed with jeans and leather jackets, that had no option but to form their own bands. These two guys were Ian McKaye, who would become the singer of Minor Threat and then member of the famous band Fugazi, and the charismatic Henry Rollins, singer of the incredible Black Flag and then of Rollins Band. Little could these pioneers of hardcore punk have imagined that years later a band like Simple Plan would exist and label themselves ´punk´. A band like Simple Plan contributes to the negative references towards punk. The commercial possibilities of rock, with a good producer, lie in good taste and catchy songs without limits. The DIY spirit has certainly been lost in many aspects around the world. The replacement of the true DIY spirit, ´Do It Yourself´, is perhaps preserved on the internet, where DIY now means ´Download It Yourself´. That´s why Neil Young said not long ago that downloading music on the internet is the new way of making radio. If we look back and review the dial of any radio, whether it´s in Rome or in any other city, we´ll see that advertising...
