‘Haul vlogging’: obsessed with consuming

Since the beginings of YouTube in 2005, the vlogging (video blogging) phenomenon hasn’t stopped expanding. However, within the world of vloggers world a rather peculiar subculture for their passionate devotion to capitalism and consuming good has developed: the haul vloggers. Generally girls, mostly Americans and between 13 and 20 years old, vloggers devote to go shopping and show their acquisitions in great detail before the camera. Such a simple but sweeping idea, the most successful ones have come to thousands of loyal viewers who are still devoted to their most banal musings It is curious both the need for sharing their consumerism exploits to a wide audience, as well as the pleasure to be part of them, albeit in a very passive and indirect way. In the end, what unites vloggers and spectators is their love for shopping, but mostly the attention they give each other. But being a form of free publicity, vloggers not the only ones that feed on the attention of thousands of followers. The brands promoted in these videos have found an effective and powerful advertising channel, so many of these brands contact the girls personally  and then flood them with free products for them to display them on their vlog. However, this is a double-sided sword, as companies have no control over what opinion will vloggers have about their product in front of thousands of people. So, thanks to these girls, a product may be exhausted in days after posting their video, or, by contrast, be a complete failure. Slow Food: Learn to live with pleasure

We live in an increasingly frantic and obsessed society by the lack of time, where finding some free time to read a book or engaging in leisure activities or those activities to relax, such as preparing a meal and taking care of ourselves become progressively more difficult. Fortunately, there are movements dedicated to counter the modern trend of the optimization of the hours, the time investment in “production.” However, there is a project that is gaining increasing strength in the world, also because it is closely related to the food, which is one of the moments of the day that is more affected by the lack of time and it is a movement called Slow Food (www.slowfoodfirenze.it).   Not surprisingly, this movement was born in Italy, a country where the food culture has always been the center of the scene, along with the artistic heritage and opera. Slow Food was founded in 1986 with the initial name “ArciGola” in the town of Bra (located in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont) by Carlo Petrini, a sociologist and gourmet with a history of political activism. To date, the Slow Food movement is found in more than 50 countries around the world and counts more than 80,000 members. It strongly rejects the standardization of taste and its aim is to promote the dissemination of a culture of taste in the pleasure of eating also generates knowledge. Clearly, for a practice like this slowness is the key, and indeed the symbol of the association is the snail. Slow Food works to safeguard the regional culinary traditions in the sustainable farming methods and typical...

Wire live in Milan

Wire is one of those bands that started playing when there weren’t too many bands hanging around the scene yet and since 1976, when the group was born, and they continued, on and on, and never separated. They did have a few hiatus that lasted a short time (except the one that went from ´85 to ´92). The group began in London with Colin Newman on vocals and guitar, Graham Lewis on bass and vocals, Bruce Gilbert on guitar and Robert Gotoba on drums. In the beginning they were strongly related to punk. In fact, on many occasions Wire was claimed to be one of the most important rock bands of the decades of the 70s and 80s. In fact, a contemporary critic called Stewart Mason said that Wire’s first three albums expanded sound barriers not only regarding punk but all music in general. Over time, the musical style was veering toward the art punk or post punk primarily by atmospheric sound that is, dark lyrics and policies. Thanks to the arrangements that they were making to the songs through their disks Wire earned a reputation as a group that experimented a lot throughout their career. Their debut album, called Pink Flag, was the most famous of their many songs and which contained songs lasting less than a minute. For example “Field Day For The Sundays”, which lasts only 28 seconds. Arctic Monkeys in Barcelona

Girls, on February 6 we are all going to the Sant Jordi Club to see the amazing Arctic Monkeys. This band from Sheffield returns to make you shiver with emotion. I remember when I first heard the Arctic Monkeys and the whole vibe that remained from the Nu-Rock Revolution, Strokes, Interpol, White Stripes and other American herbs. However, my beloved band by Alex Turner has continued playing with grace and some “originality” while others have gone off. I think of Doherty and the Libertines as well, and remember seeing them live thinking they were everything. The purpose of the tour is to promote their latest album Humbug (2009), an album full of their signature guitar sound and Turner‘s voice that made us dance. “The Jeweller´s Hands” is still one of my favorites; sexy and slow, I still get to the shower listening to it on repeat. The Arctic Monkeys sound much more post punk than their contemporaries, maybe that´s because of the raw production of their music and of course the incredibly sexy bedroom voice of lead singer Alex. Arctic Monkeys will also be in Benicassim this year with Primal Scream amongst others, but Benicassim, like the Nu-Rock, has become old news, which has more to do with drugs and party than with music. Look, I´m not a saint but I go to these events for the music. May only the British survive?   SISTER RAY So darling, rent apartments in Barcelona and do not miss this concert. Fasten the suspender belt and come with me.   Translated by: salome...

Band of Horses live in Paris

Band of Horses is a band that promotes indie folk rock music with a sound characteristic of the South of the US. The group was born in 2004 in Seattle created by Ben Bridwell and now, besides him, also Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey, Bill Reynolds and Creighton Barrett are part of the group. The band started playing very quickly and soon caught the attention of both labels and fans but it was in 2006 when they submitted *Everything All the Time* with the original *line up*, which really managed to reach the mainstream. In his debut album the song “The Funeral” was included, which was used not only for different TV advertisements but also in TV shows, video games and movies. This made Band of Horses quickly become very famous and presented, for example, different television programs viewed by millions of people across the United States. Their second production was Cease To Begin, which also had a more than substantial success. To make this production, after being out of their town for months making presentations around the world, they decided to return to their hometown to live the life they had when they were not famous and to compose and produce as before. On May 18 they launched Infinite Arms, a production which are still releasing worldwide. This time the artists from Seattle will come to France to make a presentation at La Cigale on February 26. Else Lasker-Schüler’s art in Berlin

Else Lasker-Schüler was not only a great poet, but also a wonderful illustrator. Now the Hamburger Bahnhof museum in Berlin pays tribute to this amazing artist, especially focusing on her work as a draftswoman. Opened on January 21, 2011, the exhibition was designed in collaboration with the Frankfurt am Main Jewish Museum and will be open until May 1 of that year. And the thing is that the relationship Else Lasker-Schüler had with the German capital was always close. It was there where she published her first Expressionists poems in 1899, and where in 1903 she married the writer Georg Lewin, director of the legendary magazine “Der Sturm”, which began to be published since 1910. In her drawings you can clearly perceive the influence of Jugendstil, Expressionism, Futurism and Dada trends. But especially, artists such as Franz Marc, founder of the Blue Rider and close friend of Lasker-Schuler and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, German Expressionist proponent of excellence. The exhibition will also have an interesting catalog that includes all the existing works of the artist, as well as some reports on it. And the thing is that even today, Else Lasker-Schüler is known as a prolific poet, but, in turn, has been completely excluded from the canon of art history. Therefore, this large retrospective at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin serves as the institutional consecration of a forgotten artist, who, however, provided interesting painting proposals to the art world. We encourage you to travel to the German capital early this year, and though whispers say that the city loses its charm in the cold months, here we propose you to...

History of contemporary fashion in Paris

Paris is without doubt the European fashion capital and home to some of the legendary fashion brands, where the most interesting trends are generated. Along these lines, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris opened “Les années 1990 & 2000. Contemporary fashion history”, an exhibition that includes some of the most important trends of recent fashion history. Starting from the 90´s, which marked a turning point and time of maturity in the fashion market, the exhibition presents the most radical and avant-garde fashion couture proposals, which changed the hitherto existing aesthetic parameters. Among them, there are the incredible designs by Azzedine Alaia and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, which undoubtedly belong to the realm of conceptual fashion, with its legendary collections like “The hunchbacked” Spring / Summer 1997 by Kawakubo . Nor can Jean Paul Gaultier and Yamamoto Yohi and the minimalism of Jil Sander and Helmut Lang miss this event, who opted for a sober and elegant simplicity. On the opposite side we find the frantic British designers like John Galliano, who began designing for Dior, and the enfant terrible of fashion Alexander McQueen, whose legacy is further proof of his incredible talent. The exhibition opened on November 25 and has an interesting publication which includes notes on significant moments from the 90s. More info at: http://www.lesartsdecoratifs.fr/francais/mode-et-textile/expositions-70/actuellement-447/les-annees-1990-2000-histoire/ For all fashion lovers this show is probably one of the most interesting of the season. What is acupuncture and why does it work?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest medicinal practices of the world and represents, in turn, one of the great mysteries. Because although until today a (western) scientific explanation of how it works has not been found, the truth is that, whether you believe it or not, it really works. As we said before, acupuncture is an ancient medical practice from China, and today is part of the healing techniques repertoire in many western alternative medicine clinics. It is based on the principle of energy channels, called meridians, which flow -in case of sickness- has been broken. And what acupuncturists try is to basically re-establish the harmonious flow of energy between these meridians. By inserting needles at certain points, the acupuncturist can induce the body to send healing energy to those places that are in disharmony. In short, the needles stimulate the energy flow and relieve obstructions in it. From a western point of view, these meridians correspond to the nervous system which, through pressure or inserting needles, could release neurotransmitters and hormones that relieve pain and help regulate body functions. A study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience points to the same theory. And apparently the insertion of needles emits a chemical substance called adenosine, a natural analgesic to reduce physical pain. Heloise Battista Another way to boost the immune system and loosen the tension is visiting a Hamam bath, the Ottoman equivalent of the Roman baths. With a beautiful and impressive architecture, these bathrooms will give you one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences, especially if accompanied by a massage. Emerging talent in the Strozzina, Florence

On February 19 the CCC Strozzina in Florence welcomes a select group of young artists during the award of the “Emerging Talents”. Chosen to participate by a committee of 4 Italian commissioners of high reputation such as Luca Massimo, the Director of MACRO in Rome, Chiara Bertola, director of HangarBicocca in Milan, nominees artists will present their work in the halls of CCC Strozzina. Perfect opportunity to catch up in contemporary art in Italy. On February 18, the name of the winning artist will be announced in what will be, at the same time, the opening of this fantastic exhibition. No better chance to present some of the young talents, competing for the prestigious award Giorgio Andreotta Calo: The first exhibition of the artist, held just a year ago, was ambitious and inspiring. With his video installations captivates the audience, enveloping him in his idiosyncratic narrative about the contemporary artist as a character who is always looking for the metaphysical and physical limits, such as those of his own body. Thus, in numerous projections we see the artist himself, in utter loneliness against the vast landscape. Margherita Moscardini: At the early age of 29, this Italian artist is without doubt one of the most promising talents of her generation. Her work is contemplative and complex, almost labyrinthine. And the thing is that through his work, Moscardini tries to highlight the intersections between the image, the vision, architecture and landscape. Alberto Tadiello: The young Italian, who has exhibited his work in London and New York, is a fictional narrative between materials at first sight opposed and from various disciplines and...
