Exhibition Chase the Dragon at Magda Danysz, Paris

The exhibition “Chase the Dragon” refers to that first experience with drugs and the growing obsession with them, that will take you to look for that sweet chill you felt that first time. A metaphor that also describes perfectly the addiction painting can be for an artist. When the creation moment becomes as addictive as the drug itself, and the artist, for a moment, gives the world a look inward, as the smoke cloud that traces a figure in the air, only to disappear immediately. And now Magda Danysz Gallery in Paris presents an exhibition that takes us into the eccentric and obsessive world of a diverse group of contemporary artists who will not leave you indifferent. Larry Clark’s images, film and photography legend, are an amazing visual impact, as well as filmmaker Gaspard Noe´s creative experiments, or Dada’s incredible pieces. And they all have in common their ability to thrill and make you feel the most intense emotions. On the other hand, the exhibition will also present emerging young artists such as Kulundzic Kosta, a painter who focuses his work around issues like faith and mysticism, and our society produces its own myths and heroes. We will also meet Axel Pahlavi, an Iranian painter who prompts the viewer with his harrowing and realistic gloomy pieces, pointing to the dichotomy between religious mythology and the decline of postmodern society. The opening of “Chase the Dragon” was held on January 8 at the Magda Danysz gallery and runs until February 26, 2011. At the age of 41 Kylie Minogue is one of the big pop icons of our time and one of the most famous stars in the world. Maybe that’s because in comparison with other starlets Kylie has been making pure pop music for the past 20 years und continued to reinvent herself without forgetting what her fans love about her. Maybe it is also because she has done her homework and always delivers the best and most innovative shows during her tours. The world tour „Aphrodite – Les Folies“ which starts in Denmark on February 19th will come to Germany on March 1st promises to be one of her best shows. The incredible success of her 11th album Aphrodite was what inspired Kylie to go on tour once again. With the recording of this album which mixes pop, synth and dance music Kylie brings her signature sound. Away We Go. The latest movie by Sam Mendes

If you are restless and you like travelling the world….if you never seem to find the right place…then this movie by Sam Mendes might just be what the doctor ordered. With almost 2 years delay the movie is coming to Italy. A movie you could place somewhere between the aesthetic of indie movies and the big Hollywood productions. It is pretty hard to forget American Beauty and all the awards this movie won then. Not only for Mendes as the director but also Alan Ball, the talented script writer. But life and the filmography of this brilliant director continue. Movies like Revolutionary Road, another of his celebrated movies starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio or Jarhead and Road to Perdition. This time around he went without big internationally known actors: John Krasinksi and Maya Rudolph. If American Beauty was side blow against suburban America and the bourgeoisie and Revolutionary Road about the youth that sooner or later ends in a bourgeois life then Away We Go is again about the problems between the generations but this time from a modern point of view. From the eyes of a couple that is looking for a place to settle down. The viewer accompanies them on their journey discovering the most incredible places in the US. Brilliant solutions for quotidian problems

Every day we are faced with countless decisions, beginning with the most banal, like what we are eating for breakfast, to those that can have drastic effects on our lives. Between thoughts, tasks, memories and inner monologues, mails, calls and all the information that flood our minds, it is often very difficult to concentrate on issues and decisions that require our attention and alertness to address them from the clarity and thus find the optimal solution, that will help us move forward. Because brilliant ideas only arise with our heads loose and sharp, when we are alert and in maximum concentration. However, reaching that state of mind and, therefore, a brilliant solution, it is not impossible. This requires, 1) focusing, 2) wandering around, 3) emptying. Although it sounds like a cryptic formula, steps to follow are simple, but very effective. 1)   Concentration: Define your problem and think of those facts about it that are real and true. People involved, when it came, and things that you certainly know that will happen in the future, and the impact that this problem will have on you and other people. This will help you see the problem from a more objective view and, therefore, to develop practical and feasible solutions. 2)   Wandering around. Wandering mentally around, meditating, and becoming lost in thought of the problem can be very profitable. When people start to distract their problem with other activities, which must be completely alien to the topic, the brain has the chance to process all the aspects of the problem. 3)   Emptying. Your mind needs a break, that is to say, to...

The Gates to Paradise

There are moments where we all feel like we are in hell and in these moments we wish to escape to paradise. In terms of religion, however, this is not that easy when we think about the idea of paradise as border to the divine gardens. According to some the term resembles the Garden of Eden, a place that existed before time where man was one with nature, before he know about culture, language, individualization, symbols and analogies. For others it is a subtle but essential reminder of the place where we can find the individual but also the collective. An irrational but profound memory of pleasant moments in the womb of the mother or in a higher state of mind with visions that other populations achieved by eating certain mushrooms. It’s no secret that we can escape to paradise in Florence where we find the most celebrated gates. At the Piazza del Duomo to be exact, on the east side of the baptistery, most likely the oldest building in town, west of the beautiful cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiore. In such an ambiance under the sky of Florence looking at the 10 liberations at the gates of paradise (telling episodes of the Old Testament from the creation of Adam and Eve to the wonderful encounter between Salomon and the queen of Saba) it is difficult to overlook the ambiguity that the gates bare that were created that they won’t ever be forgotten. This wonder by the sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti (1381 – 1455) was created in a public competition for the giving away of a work of Brunelleschi...

Fast Food Diet

Obesity is one of the most frequent nutritional pathologies of our time and a chronic disease that’s closely related to the way we eat and the lifestyle we lead. For many years the industry is bombarding us with new diets that can’t seem to keep their promise of loosing weight. To confirm his theory about the best method to loose weight, nutricionist Dr Mark Haub developed the “Twinkie Diet” whose name refers to the All-American favorite snack. This is certainly one of the most frightening diets since the Atkins diet that recommended solely eating meat. With this diet he wanted to put an end to the never ending discussion about which method is better to lose weight: counting calories vs. eating healthy. With the “Twinkie Diet” Dr Haub wanted to prove that the only way to successfully lose weight is to count calories and therefore you should not have to abstain from fast food. 10 weeks long the expert ate the worst and most obscure foods, like the notorious Twinkie and potato chips etc. without exceeding a calorie intake of 1800 calories. And although he did indeed lose 14 kilos and his cholesterine levels improved, Haub wouldn’t recommend only eating fast food to anyone. Just because his weight is in a “normal” range doesn’t mean that he is healthier. Exhibition “From Luca Giordano to Goya” in Barcelona

The Francisco Godia Foundation is presenting the exhibition „From Luca Giordano to Goya: 18th Century Painting in Spain”, an exhibition that aims to present Spanish painting of this century which doesn’t receive much attention because of the Golden Age of painting, the 17th century. The exhibition presents 23 works from Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism und the early Romanticism but you will also see paintings that influenced these two artists profoundly. Like the title suggests the focus of the exhibition is Francisco de Goya. This great artist, one of the most important in art history, is represented in this exhibition with 5 different works. Amongst them paintings that have been talked about a lot but seen very little: Sacrificio a Vesta (1771), and Sacrificio a Pan (1771). In these paintings Goya’s interest in mythological themes is very present, that coined his youth. Another work La obra, con la conducciüon de un sillar (1786) is one of the few that belongs to a Spanish collection, that of the Planeta group. The paintings from the 18th century haven’t gained much attention in Spanish exhibitions until now, which was a reason for the Francisco Godia Foundation to take on this endeavour. Talking a walk through Barcelona: “Don Quijote in Barcelona”

Barcelona is the only real city that is mentioned in „Don Quijote de la Mancha“ and that’s because Miguel de Cervantes visited the city and was so captured by it that he described it in his book. Now there are organized tours throughout the city that explore the different places that Quijote and Sancho passed. On this route we are reminded of passages of the book, in which he expressed the greatness and beauty of the city. And Cervantes was not only fascinated by the city but also the sea and that is why he described it so delicately in his texts. Passing the Plaça de Palau where the gate of the city walls once were and where Cervantes initially places Quijote. We take a walk to Call street where the print shop of Sebastián de Comelles is that Hildalgo also visits in his novella. Still in the Barrio Gotico we pass the Perot lo Lladre Street where the Catalan bandit will lead Don Quijote and Sancho to Barcelona. Orhan Pamuk: The Museum of Innocence

Everyone who was lucky enough to read Istanbul, City and Memories written by the Turkish author and Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk can certainly confirm that he has an extraordinary ability to describe this city by the means of his memories. And also how he encourages the reader to ponder the complex relationship between literature and reality and the different ways in which the first influences the second. If the aforementioned book mentions this differential characteristic of the city by describing its sights not in regards to their public presentation but as part of their surroundings where life happens then The Museum of Innocence reflects the similarities between novel and museum, both spaces to gather details of our lives that are doomed to disappear with time. According to Pamuk the purpose of gathering objects is to hold on to the past. Although the novel is about an extreme love and shows the same conventions just like a melodrama, a musical or a romantic movie that coined Turkish cinema in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, his novel is more personal and intimate without being too dependent on the experience of the author or the incidents that happen to the narrator. He is a member of one of the wealthiest families in Istanbul and is passionately in love with one of his cousins who is much younger than him and has lower social status. This love turns his life upside down and it seems like he is sleepwalking through streets, cafes, restaurants, bars, cinemas and houses looking for signs and things she might have left. With those he creates a museum,...
