Rome Opera

The Teatro dell´Opera di Roma is the essence of the spirit of the city. Initially known as Teatro Costanzi, it was inaugurated in 1880 with the opera ´Semiramide´ by Gioachino Rossini.

Its first name was given as a tribute to the financer Domenico Costanzi, who ordered the work to a Milanese architect, Achille Sfondini. He conceived it in the shape of a horseshoe which gave its inside formidable accoustics. The Costanzi family administered the theatre until 1926, when it was bough and became property of the city of Rome by order of Mussolini.

Located in the Piazza Beniamino Gigli, it´s been the stage of the most important opera representations in the history of music. Tosca by Giacomo Puccini was premiered successfully in January 1900 and many other operas marked the musical activity in this theatre.

The theatre has been refurbished, enlarged and transformed on many occasions, as recently as 1960. In over 100 years of life, the Teatro dell´Opera di Roma has been the city´s emblem, and through it a large amount of important artists have passed, such as Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, Enrico Caruso and an interminable list of singers and authors.

Opera is a pleasure that brings the spirits up, so don´t miss out on it if you´re spending a few relaxing days in apartments in Rome
