Carnival of Cultures in Berlin

Carnival of Cultures in Berlin

From the 10th to 13th of June we will have the opportunity to enjoy the Carnival of Cultures in Berlin. A festival that fills the streets of the German capital, with joy, dancing and debauchery, just as said by those who have experienced one of the best parties of late spring. Carnival of Cultures was created as a celebration of the immigrant population, roughly about 450,000 inhabitants, of the total population of 3.4 million. They brought new influences to the culture of Berlin. In 1995 the city radically changed due to the fall of the Wall and the unification of East and West Berlin. This resulted in conflicts of intolerance and rejection, probably due to the political and economic crisis. Ethnic groups clashed and a unifying thread between the various Cultures was needed. The concepts of City and diversity, gave life to Workshop of Cultures, which brought together communities from different religions, nationalities, races and cultures in order to unify efforts around a political platform based on cultural diversity and tolerance. The carnival was the unifying thread. The Carnival was founded in 1996 with the aim of achieving integration through artistic expression, also by means of the creation of hundreds of jobs generated from the organization and activities performed during the two days of the carnival. Since then, the Carnival became the most important festival for migrants from all over the continent who live in Berlin. European models, mainly Italian and Spanish, inspired the Carnival, although this event has its own idiosyncrasy. Ethnic groups from around the world, gather every year in Berlin to present their arts and expose...
Spain, 15M movement: How did we reach this situation? And now, what’s next?

Spain, 15M movement: How did we reach this situation? And now, what’s next?

On one hand, there is the will of a great part of the society to create a new system, and on the other, another major part has voted right wing –except in the Basque Country, where once again, they have given a lesson to justice in real democracy as the winning party, Bildu, at first was not allowed to run for the elections up until two weeks before but ended up winning the elections in most of the region. How did we reach this situation? The mismanagement of the crisis by politicians -and notice that I do not say government, but politicians as, before such socio-economic debacle, don’t you think they should have joined forces to chalk it? While (most of) European countries put their efforts together to overcome the economic crisis, the Spanish politicians seem like kids in the school yard throwing dirt at each other. Corruption in high political and economic circles (and in medium and small circles, too.) This State, traditionally bandit, remains faithful to its political customs with more than 50 defendants who have been able to submit to the municipal elections (for more info: http://bukowski.lacoctelera.net/post/2011/05/20/espa-a-pol-ticos-imputados-corrupci-n-pueden) A two-party system of camouflaged democracy that contributes to a feedback circle to alternate terms of a stalled government, leaving little or no options for people who bet on a change in the system. Just to get an idea of the absolute power of the banks, consider how the “Banco Santander” contributed to the current financial crisis and to sustain corrupt regimes. This bank helped launder money from Equatorial Guinea´s President Teodor Obiang acting under national laws not to...

Champs Elysées

One of the places that we cannot miss if we go to Paris is the Champs Elysées Avenue, which leads to the Arc de Triomphe, where one can find the most famous and luxurious shops in the world.   Located in the 8th Arrondissement, the Champs Elysées offer all types of shops, from exclusive restaurants, cafeterias and bars to the most eccentric fashions houses, beauty, jewelry and make up.   Known worldwide, it was catalogued as the most beautiful avenue in the world and it´s a pleasure to walk down it´s tree-filled streets, history and fashion.   Renting in this area can cost around one million euros a year, which makes it the most expensive area in Europe, overtaking even London.   As the city´s most famous street, every year they celebrate commemorative acts in the honour of the fallen in the wars, or festivals on the day of the Bastille. It´s traditional that the military marches down the Champs Elysées and that people greet and congratulates them from the sidewalks.   But above all, it´s charm resides in the warm climate that you can breathe amongst the thousands of shops that make it up.   Champs Elysées is the place where you should go. Les Quatre Temps

Paris is probably one of the most fashionable and glamourous cities in the world. Every year, millions of people walk its streets dressed in the latest fashion and one of the places that they go to discover the latest trends is, undoubtedly, Les Quatre Temps, one of the city´s biggest shopping centres.   While many tourists decide to visit the galleries in the Champs Elysées and see its windows, the locals go to Les Quatre Temps do do their shopping. The reason is pretty obvious, they get a large quantity of brands in its hundreds of shops and a much reduced price that you can find them in the tourist places.   The strong point of Les Quatre Temps is, undoubtedly, the clothes shops where you can find the most important national and international brands but, as it couldn´t be any other way, there are also dozens of restaurants that go from fast food to really elegant places where they serve regional food.   Les Quatre Temps is in the district of La Défense where you can find the most commercial part of the city and, for that reason, getting to the place will be very simple.   If you want to enjoy the galleries of one of the biggest shopping centres, rent apartments in...
Nudist Beaches in Barcelona

Nudist Beaches in Barcelona

To be honest, “nudism” is not really my thing. I mean, I do go topless, and I use a tanga which resembles a piece of dental floss. But my thing is more to suggest than just show everything, and it always has been. For those of you who like to show the best (or worst) of your bodies, and underneath the sunshine, my beloved Barcelona has many options and surprises in store for you. You can reach many beaches from the city – via car, train, bus you can pretty much get anywhere without any problems. Of course, you can stay in hotels on the beach – but as you imagine, during the high season, the prices rocket. Truthfully, if you are after something a bit more secluded, Barcelona isn´t your nudist option. If you want parties, chiringuitos, drinks till late and the whole city at your finger tips – Barcelona is for you. One beach just a step away from the city is Mar Bella. Only 500m long, it´s in Barceloneta, and well located, in front of a row seafood restaurants, and near lots of bars for drinking and eating tapas. It´s a very touristy area…and is full of nudists and curiosities. With its white sand, this artificial beach is a good option if you want something to near to where you are staying, and it also has wheelchair access. San Sebastian is another beach just by the city centre. Apparently one of the oldest in Barcelona, it´s also known as the Baths of San Sebastian, and is next to the Club Natación Barcelona. In spite of its...
