The Hungarian Natural History Museum (NHMUS according to its initials in Hungarian) is a natural history museum and its main task is to pick up, preserve and protect the historical material in relation to the country and introduce it to the people in a simple and easy way to comprehend. In 1802 the count Ferenc Széchényi asked permission to the emperor for giving his collection of studies to the Hungarian nation and the permission was conceded. This was the year when the Hungarian National History Museum was founded and from that moment on, different important people from Hungary gave their collections to the place turning it into one of the most important in the country. Hungary suffered really serious periods of totalitarianism (fascism and communism) during a big part of the 20th century and The House of Terror is a museum dedicated exclusively to present those periods. The museum, which is located on Andrássy Avenue, opened its doors in 2002 and it´s situated in a building that, previously, housed a police department. One of the places in The House of Terror which strikes the most are its original basements that hold the cells where they isolated the prisoners and the interrogation rooms which are exactly like they were fifty years ago. From when you walk into the museum you can listen to a really dark music that will accompany all the visitors during the whole visit. The House of Terror has three different floors that are full of different objects and exhibitions. In some they will present nazi photographs, in others captures of the Chain Bridge completely broken and in others uniforms or different propagandas that were used for brain washing and more. All the tourists that arrive in Budapest by plane and go from the airport to the city centre ask what that building is that houses the Museum of Applied Arts. The reason why everyone asks about it is because the building has a very special appearance, one of the most important ones of Art Nouveau in the city. The Museum of Applied Arts was opened in 1872 and, at that moment, it was the third in the whole of Europe behind the one in Vienna and London. But many people don´t know the meaning of ´applied arts´. They are objects which are used in everyday life but that have a special design or aesthetic. This is the reason why in the inside of the museum you can see chairs, teacups, clocks, tables, glasses or different objects that can appear in the daily life of any ordinary person. Those tourists that arrive in Budapest and are history lovers can´t not go the the History Museum (Budapesti Történeti Múzeum in Hungarian) that goes from the Middle Ages until the current times, crossing through all the most important events in Hungary. The museum is located in Buda Castle and, for that reason, it´s also popularly known as the Museum of the Castle and, also, it´s divided in four different floors. Three above ground and one below the basement. THe collections that you can enjoy in the galleries go from simple objects that belonged to different important Hungarian people to completely recreated rooms of important places. One of the most interesting things that the museum has is the subsoil which, despite not having any relevant artistic works, turns into the reconstructed corridors that were used after the bombings during the Second World War. The Hungarian National Gallery is probably one of the most beautiful museums in Budapest because it´s located in Buda Castle which is a monumental site that, also, presents the art of the country that goes from the Middle Ages to the 20th century and, also, presents a very interesting contemporary art section. Many of the collections that are presented in the gallery were exhibited, from the moment of their creation, in the Hungarian National Museum and in the Fine Arts Museum. In the museum the majority of the works that can be found are paintings but also it offers some interesting objects and, also, writings from some of the most important figures in Hungarian history. Some of the most important painters that you can enjoy in the gallery are, for example, Mihály Munkácsy, Pal Szinyei Merse and Bertalan Székely. The major part of Buda Castle was destroyed during the Second World War because it was heavily bombed and, for that reason, a major reconstruction had to take place in the castle.
