Taberna La Bola

Taberna La Bola is a restaurant in Madrid which specializes in “cocido” (typical stew from Madrid). Madrid´s cocido is a typical Spanish dish and everyone´s favourite no matter from which social class they come from.   Although it´s a dish of mixes, the “Cocido Madrileño” is very tasty and its preparation must be supervised. It´s a stewpot that´s cooked at a low heat, preferently over coal from oak.   In the last century, the newspapers of the time said that La Bola was the favourite place of the the people of Madrid, but because they couldn´t mix social classes there, they sold three different types of cocido. At midday they served the cheapest one that didn´t contain any meat. The workers and the employees of the area went to eat then. Later, at 1pm, they served it with chicken and it was the students´ favourite time, although it was a little bit more expensive. And, finally, from 2pm, the best cocido of all was served in La Bola, which contained meat and pork. It was a lot more expensive but the commensals were journalists and senators, people of a much higher purchasing power.   But stories like this are abundant in this beautiful restaurant in Madrid that today serves everyone the same dish with no exception. Its menu is varied and there´s a choice for each taste.   If you want to get to know how the cocido tastes like in La Bola, rent apartments in Madrid and feel like a Madrileño for the...

Plaza Mayor

The Plaza Mayor of Madrid is a symbol of the city. There isn´t a tourist who doesn´t visit it and who doesn´t remember it with affection. It´s a beautiful square, very atypical, because it´s surrounded by big buildings. Ordered to be finished in the 17th century by king Felipe III, the square was the headquarters for loads of political, cultural and commercial events since it´s inauguration. There they take place the famous bull and caña (small beer) festivals. The most important buildings that the square houses are the Casa de la Panadería and the Casa Carnicería, two of which are still standing and working actively. There were also royal residencies in the first floors of the buildings. But in 1790 the square caught fire and it lost nearly half of all the constructions. But a few years later they began reconstructing it with reforms to the whole square. For example, they banned traffic, they closed the corners and they remodelled the façades for improvement.   Today all tourists can enjoy a typical Madrid square, where the hundreds of balconies improve the landscape. If you want to visit Plaza Mayor and walk in between its façades, get Madrid...

Festival Grec in Barcelona

Festival Grec in Barcelona

By the time the Grec Festival gets underway mid-June, Barcelona will be humid, hot and in the steamy depths of a Mediterranean summer. This is the beauty of the Grec Festival: many of its shows are held outside. In its 35th year now, many of the festivals shows are put on in Barcelona´s Greek Theater, or Teatre Grec set in the leafy hillside of Montjuic (Passeig Santa Madrona, 36, 08038 Barcelona). I went to a flamenco performance during the Grec Festival one year at Teatre Grec, and was impressed by the magical, intimate quality of this venue. It should be stated that Teatre Grec is not always easy to get to, but with patience concert-goers can grab a bus up the mountainside from downtown, or grab a cab. Not all the festival shows are held in the al fresco Teatre Grec. This year many shows will also be put on at Teatre Lliure de Gràcia, La Caldera, and at Mercat de les Flors which is one of the city´s most important venues for contemporary dance. Mercat de les Flors literally means Flower Market, and once was the place to go to for carnations and roses. These days its an intriguing space to see Andrés Corchero (8-13 July) or Àngels Margarit (22 – 24 July) perform with passionate grace. While dance is the main focus of the 2011 Grec Festival, also expect music of all kinds, and theater (usually in Spanish or Catalan). Get tickets in advance, as many of the popular Grec shows sell out ahead of time (take it from one who has missed some great music for...
