Freedom Tower in New York

Freedom Tower in New York

Freedom Tower was the original name of the current One World Trade Center in New York. The skyscraper replacing the Twin Towers, after its destruction in the terrorist attack in 2001, it is the new symbol of American society and will eventually be opened in 2013 in Lower Manhattan. The construction of this building has had a cost of 2000 million dollars and reaches a height of 541 meters, qualifying it as the third tallest building in the world (Burj Dubai with a height of 828 meters, Torres Abraj Al Bail with 601 meters height). 242,000 meters square will be used for offices. This skyscraper is the result of a fusion of ideas from the architects David M. Childs and Daniel Libeskind, of the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP study, which was introduced in 2003 in the Federal Hall by Governor George E. Pataki and Michael Rubens Bloomberg, Mayor of New York. Its architecture is very particular, it has a square base that is changing as it rises and as a visual results it becomes eight isosceles triangles, ending with the surface of the top floor at a rotation of 45 degrees fromthe base of the building. The building culminates with a glass wall that projects a powerful image. To complete it, it  will have a TV antenna that will simulate the Statue of Liberty and a system of lights that will illuminate the skies over New York and will screen over 300 meters from the end of the tower. This building is full of symbols, one of them is that the height of 541 meters which is equivalent to 1,776...
Amsterdam without marijuana

Amsterdam without marijuana

Those were the years of the Flower Power Revolution of 1968, when university students from around the world were about to change the world with poetic slogans and fine sand beaches (supposedly) that were hiding under the urban paving. The air of freedom (the soul) were mixed with the smoke of cannabis and other more powerful hallucinogens . All drugs were tolerated in the private Western sector (with their restrictions by country) but most are prohibited worldwide, that rose a slogan and as a trademark of rebellious youth who, to date, is reaching a comfortable and conservative retirement.   So we´re talking about the mid-seventies of the last century, Holland pointed to a legal break in terms of what soft drugs are concerned and allowed the sale in some stores, thus throughout the country, the boom of the Coffee-shop starts. With this measure, the capital of Holland, one of the most cultured and educated in the world, became a favorite destination for those travelers in search of freedom: sex (remember its flagship the Red Light District, but we shall leave that for another day) alcohol and marijuana. In these dark CoffeeShop in Amsterdam you could acquire, in all possible ways, superb quality soft drugs for personal use and “on the spot”. This has meant that, in these last thirty years, these places, even if marginal, have become an institution and no traveler passing through Amsterdam, even those who do not use marijuana or do not even smoke, has not  stopped in a coffeeshop to “smell” their peculiar atmosphere of permissiveness and freedom. Also cult films like “Pulp Fiction” by...
Bruce Springsteen Concert in Barcelona

Bruce Springsteen Concert in Barcelona

Exactly one hundred years ago, Europe was having an exciting debate on patriotism. The continent seemed to go into an inevitable war of incomparably greater proportions than any other before, the socialist left had analyzed the phenomenon in terms of struggle against the imperial supremacy of one country over others. For intellectuals like Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg, imperialism was merely an advanced stage of capitalism and the global war, which would result in inescapable so therefore could not be more contrary to the interests of workers living in the countries involved. The real enemy was the capitalist exploitation and to defeat it, the workers around the world should join forces instead of wanting to kill each other. Lucidly analyzed the situation, for years the socialist internationalism made an outstanding effort to convince workers that they should not participate in the coming war. However, when the hour of truth came, the national socialist parties were convinced of the necessity of a war, because of the astute inclusion in the government of each state. Co-opted in this way in the name of patriotism and reasons of state, the internationalist left suffered a tremendous defeat and Europe for four years became the bloodiest battle ground ever known over a conflict that killed much of the youth of the time, causing a deep wound to the European civilization of which probably it will never be healed, while creating the germ of an irreparable crisis in confidence in the idea of humanity and progress. Despite the lessons they might have learned, we seem to remain hostage to the idea of the possibility of the...
