Snow White´s stepmother is the quintessential prototype of pride: she doesn’t accept that there is someone more beautiful than her. Pride is a deadly sin that is disguised behind many faces. It is considered the worst sin of all by its rejection of any criticism, failure, help or apology. To think you are superior than others can be very destructive indeed.
To feel proud about yourself is not bad, because you can believe in your goals, and to improve yourself, but you should never fall into pride. Good examples of pride are: when parents are proud of their children´s progress or to be happy because of the victory of your football team. To be realistic and honest is a great virtue. We should also not abuse humility because we might lose our self-esteem, and this would paralyze us. We should find a balance and be honest with ourselves and, above all, with others.
If a person is susceptible, egocentric, afraid of being weak or if he has an arrogant attitude, this person is guilty of pride. The best way to know if someone is possessed by the demon of pride is to make him look ridiculous: those who praise its merits do not usually laugh about themselves and they have no sense of humour.
The Greeks condemned pride in order to avoid any inequalities. Thus, an arrogant person had to go into exile for fear of breaking the social balance. This is a tragic ending: people who feel proud usually feel angry and envy too, two sins that also look at the others as if they were threats.
