The Plaza de Cibeles is one of the most visited in Spain because it has the Fountain of Cibeles which is one of the icons of Madrid. The square is situated in the heart of the city and the fountain presents Cybele, the Greek goddess of fertility that holds a scepter and a key while she´s impulsed by two lions.
The fountain was designed by Ventura Rodríguez in 1782 and it was originally in the main door of the Prado Museum in front of the Fountain of Neptuno.
One of the most striking things that it has is that, the football club Real Madrid, one of the favourites of the city, adopted the fountain and it´s used by the fans as a meeting point and many times you can see players thanking her when the team win a trophy.
In the four corners of the square there are interesting and very beautiful places both for tourists and locals. In one there´s the Palacio de Buenavista, built in 1777; on the other the Palacio de Linares which was built in 1877; on the other the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Banco de España, the Spanish Bank.
Without doubt, the Plaza de Cibeles is a place that you has to be visited by all tourists who arrive at the city. Get Madrid accommodation and don´t let this opportunity escape.
