The Almudena Festival is an unmissable festival for all of you, worshipers, agnostics, believers and non-believers. Actually, it´s not just about celebrating the city´s Patron Saint, the Virgin of the Almudena, but also about a unique occasion to celebrate popular tradition, to get out on the street and gather, to try and re-establish, at least a little, of the lost citizen spirit.
For all of these reasons, the men and women of Madrid will leave their apartments in Madrid and go out on the street with ´mantillas´ and capes and will go en mass towards the Plaza Mayor, where they´ll begin to enjoy the party.
Right there a mass will take place and the most orthodox ones will accompany the Virgin by walking in procession and contributing to the floral offering. La Almudena is a religious festival which has its roots in the legend of a miracle.
They say the she was hidden because of the arrival of the moors, together with three candles and that, three centuries later, she reappeared intact, even with the three candles still lit up. Traditions like these give us the chance to remember our culture and offer us the chance to celebrate it together.
