Just like every other year, there has been only one date in mind recently. If you are an American citizen or simply love the Americas as much as I, you´ll know just which date that is. That´s right, I’m talking about the 4th of July.
Here I will give you a short brief on one of the US’ 4 National holidays and give you a little side information. You may use this knowledge in know-it-all humor, but in goodwill of course. A little extra knowledge on their National Birthdate couldn’t hurt.
The 4th of July is one of the most enthusiastically celebrated events in the States. When 13 colonies fought for revolution to declare independence and were given their right to freedom. The year was 1776 and for that first extra slice of pie, the vote was in fact given on the 2nd of July 1776. But it was only signed and printed on the 4th July. Hence, the birthdate as we know it.
You would also believe Philadelphia’s most famous liberty bell was rung on this date I presume? Wrong again. It was not until 4 days later, to mark the proud liberty of freedom and to honor the very first public reading of the declaration. Even to start with, they knew how to make an entrance.
The congressmen marked this date as one of only 4 National Federal holidays. Including New Years, Veterans Day and Christmas. And to mark the occasion, America goes all out! Here I´ll give you an idea of how New York City marks their spot on the map and why you should head over for your own NYC experience.
During the day:
American’s mark this holiday with parades, music, to family gatherings, speeches and public readings every year. Each street corner will be filled with vibrant passion! The crowds all dressed up from head-to-toe in fancy dress, pearls, face paints and glitter alike! You´ll smell and taste a wide array of mouthwatering cuisines that just leaves your senses heightened and tingling. Why not head down to the local beach if the park is too full. You´ll find plenty of people to mark the occasion with. What´s not to love! And this is only the very beginning.
Since 1941, American´s decided to add a little relaxation to this national holiday. You´ll find many enjoying a Barbeque with an assortment of luscious meats, or a homemade picnic in the park as they enjoy the sun and the company of loved ones. Or why not head along to the parades as they dance to the beat and hold their heads high like true patriots!
In the evening:
In the past, artillery shots were used until the 1860s when canons fell out of fashion. Yet one tradition that has been loved by many, has surpassed its way through history. It´s the ever famous fireworks. Congress first authorized pyrotechnics as a part of the 4th of July celebration, way back in 1777. Today, more than 14000 public displays go off across the Nation every year. The largest of these is celebrated by Macy´s in their 30 minute ´Spectacular´, in New York. More than 75000lbs of fireworks go off during the half hour show and is attended by more than 2million people! Now that’s a sight we have to see!
There are many events you can head out to if you really want a taste for everything New York has to offer. Why not head out to an outdoor party, or head to a beach fiesta if that´s more your scene. There´s access to the best rooftops in the city for the magnificent night view. Heck, book out a riverboat and see the fireworks as you sip over that luxurious glass of champagne if you will!
Or escape to the Hamptons and the Jersey Shore. Watch the fireworks in their utmost beauty as they strike over the Hudson River. It´ll make for a truly spectacular Independence Day experience, I assure you.
New York really knows how to celebrate in style. With the city patriotic and passionate in uproar. It only makes the hearts of ours wish we had a first class seat to see the amazing sights.
Now before I do end with the fun events New York has in store, why not try something a little more local and of traditional value. If you have the time, head over and see Nathan´s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Yes that´s right, a Hot Dog Contest. This tradition is nearly a century old and is of course held on the 4th July in NYC. Last year alone there was a turnout of 40000 spectators in Brooklyn, with more than 1million home viewers! Make sure to grab a front row seat. I assure you, I would!
