The Cathedral of Madrid is the Almudena Cathedral and it´s pretty modern if it´s compared with the rest of churches and buildings in Madrid. Built towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, it´s a tourist attraction which is visited daily by thousands of people from all over the world.
The Cathedral today finds itself where there used to be Madrid´s first ever mosque. Later it was built like a church with the name of Santa María de la Almudena. But it was in 1868 when the church that there is today was built, dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena. In the cathedral we can find a crypt where the photograph of the Virgin is, which dates from the 16th century. This virgin is very loved in the city because she´s the patron saint of the city.
After suffering many attacks during the World Wars, the cathedral was remodelled in a neoclassic style and the work was completed in 1993 and it received the blessing of the Pope John Paul II who visited the church in person. To commemorate this event, on the outside of the Cathedral we can find a beautiful statue of Pope John Paul II.
