Sadly it says a lot about our time and civilization that the only drugs that are legal are those that cloud the mind and intelligence. Under absurd and hypocritical mottos (can we not label as drugs – and many of them strong ones, if there was any sense from the slightest intellectual strictness to make the famous and biased distinction between hard and soft drugs – tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, medicines…?) such as zero tolerance to all types of drugs, not only do we condemn an unfair and unnecessary social stigma to a large part of the world population, also insulting history and human intelligence, but we also stop people who out of free will decide to consume illegal substances from accessing a minimum quality control, which causes many thousands of tragic accidents every day which are perfectly avoidable.
And if all of this nonsense wasn´t enough, the fact is still that political prohibitions, an attempt to attack the individual right of deciding freely regarding what only concerns one self and distance ourselves from the possibility of building and accessing a necessary culture to do with the ways in which our body reacts to certain existent substances, have not only solved the so called ´drug problem´ (drugs are still consumed massively all over the world) but we can also state that they´re the ones responsible for creating them. You could argue that it´s precisely since the existence of prohibition that there´s a social problem with drugs, and not the other way around. But, of course, prohibition allows the financing of armies, psychologists and entire police forces and civil servants who, actually, are dedicated to social oppression while with the illegally obtained money through their corrupt and illegal drug trafficking, they launder great fortunes which are used to finance government policies around the world.
As its etymology and use in many modern languages shows, the word drug, far from being bad in itself, also means medicine, something that can cause us both good and bad, depending exclusively on its use, for which prohibition stops us from acquiring the necessary culture.
The Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, which will take place from the 20th to the 24th of November, coinciding with the goods of the seasonal harvest (http://cannabiscup.com/), it has the double intention of amusing and peacefully informing on these subjects in a city which has been a model of social respect for decades, even breaching the own law about the subject, in relation with the civilized consumption of marihuana and hashish, substances that far from blurring our mind, are able not only of acting as efficient therapeutic tools with minimal, at least in comparison, secondary effects, but to also open our brain to peaceful, creative, spiritual and non-competitive dimensions which don´t seem to rhyme properly with the rhythm and style of everyday capitalist lifestyle
If you rent apartments in Amsterdam don´t miss out on it. It´s a perfect example of respect and coexistence which helps to diffuse the idea of the demonization of cannabis which, of course, nobody should take against their will, is a handicap for any society which aspires to be civilized.
