We´re all aware of what´s going on in New York these days and the great efforts of the Occupy Wall Street movement to stop the huge machine which is feeding the economic recession and which is pushing us towards the economic abyss. Day to day, thanks to the social networks, we´re aware of everything which is going on on a global level regarding activism and political actions of thousands of young people, students, unemployed and activists. The benefits of the social networks have permitted that a very simple idea like pacific protesting spreads throughout the globe and that people wake up to new ways of communication and action. However, on the social networks there´s a trap to which people are just reacting to: the discomfort of anonymity and consumerism through itself.
Now there are websites on the internet that offer Anonymous products. Mainly T-shirts with the slogans of the anonymous group of activists, the logos created by them and the phrases which refer to the group. So what´s the problem with this? Simple. A proposal that at first sight was marginal and against the system is being absorbed by the system in a much more accelerated way.
We have to pay attention to the information that´s being handled on the social networks. Not everything that´s being posted or tweeted is necessarily true. This makes the the configuration of truth goes through us and the level of fiction of the news is manipulated even more. In the case of the Anonymous ´merchandise´, we just have to turn our back on these type of operations for wanting to profit from the efforts of aware citizens who claim everyone´s rights. Let´s think in all the abuses that the police is carrying out on the protesters, the arrests and the violence that they have to endure.
Occupy Wall Street has taken an important step forward for all the international community. It´s important that the sacrifice carried out by these activists, as well as movements such as the outraged of 15M, and everyone around the world doesn´t fall into the hands of people who are interested in making money from them. When reading the different social networks, it´s important to guarantee that this information comes from reliable sources or, at least, have a previous chain of information which can guarantee that it has a serious source. Not all the information on the social networks is true. However, let this not be an impediment to join these important social movements that, if aren´t a solution today, are the best way of raising the voice to claim for our rights. Activism carries on on the internet. Spreading an idea can help other to join and be part of the radical change that is happening right now.
