Beatriz Preciado in Seville

The Andalucian International University and Centre of Art will carry out, between the 2nd and 4th of November, ´Cuerpo Común. Guía de Modelos Somatopolíticos´ (Common Body. Somatopolitical Model Guide and of their possible diverted uses ), a cycle of seminars and conferences on the compelx relation between the body, as a ´soma´ or live body, in which our society has fixated into a physical body handled and manipulated by a hegemonic power and bio-politics. The activities in workshops, seminars and conferences will take place in the Monastery of La Cartuja in Seville.

In this interesting meeting of intellectuals, students and people interested on the subject of how current society regulates and modifies somatopolitics, we can get to know and influence our environment and ourselves, creating self-conscience from our existance and the sociopolitical relations which determine the place of the body in the public eye.

At the seminar there´ll be the famous Spanish philosopher Beatriz Preciado. Born in Burgos in 1970, she´s revolutionized the world of discussion with her contributions on Queer theory, which refers to the sociopolitical construction of sexual identities generated from hegemony.

Preciado is an architect, philosopher and got a doctorate from Princeton University, she has a masters in Contemporary Philosophy and Gender Theory from the New School of Social Research in New York, and has been a disciple of Jacques Derrida and Agnes Heller. Her work is, today, one of the most outstanding in Queer Theory and she´s published a series of books which are a route of thought on the invention of the biological body as a political body.

Her book ´Counter-sexual Manifest´ is a philosophical thought on subjectivity and identity based on the theory of Michel Foucault, where the construction of the sexual identity from the relations of power is explored. It´s a true ´counter-sexual manifesto´ which breaks the molds of the political rules which determine the sex. Man, woman, hetero, trans, or what? Who determines it and from where is it determined, is what this philosopher ventures into, who has submitted her body to transformation with testosterone injections.

From architecture, she´s examined the city as organisms, artifacts created as social and political constructions, which in the same way as another organism have identity changes to the extent which it´s accommodated to serve a specific aim which articulates the pre-established interests by the dominant system.

She criticizes capitalism, which she defines as pharma-pornographic for its insatiable destructive capacity from over-consumerism and the creation of mutations which allow self-destruction to carry on happening. Preciado establishes that the potential to come out of this crisis is in the counter-culture which is brought by those who are against colonial systems, understanding these from post-colonial theory beyond the territory, such as gays, whores, lesbians, transexuals, etc, who delete the normative ideas of the family, nation and race.

The meeting will also have the participation of Susan Stryker, the writer, investigator and militant of the American Gay and Trans Movement.
