Italy is famous for its churches and cathedrals and the one in Florence deserves a special mention. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is the third biggest in the world (behind the Vatican´s Saint Peter´s Basilica and Sant Paul´s in London).
The Italian name of the cathedral comes from “duomo” meaning “God´s house”, and it´s located in the centre of Florence, rising enormously in the middle of the city with 90 metres in height. Built in 1412 it gets its name from “Santa Maria of the Flower” (in English) in reference to the lily flower, symbol of the city.
Gothic and Renaissance style, the cathedral is a true work of art that the tourist cannot miss if visiting Florence. With its immense dome, its façade, arches, door and crypt, it constitutes a unique piece of history and universal architecture that was intervened by various artists in its different periods of decoration, remodellation and maintenance. For example, one of the frescos of the Dome was painted by Federico Zuccaro and Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century.
