Concerts in New York

BAM Cafe in New York

This story began 150 years ago in a place set apart from what was then still known as the New World. There, in a port city filled with skyscrapers, in a neighborhood known for its bohemians and excellent artists, in an old abandoned building, the BAM Cafe was born as the meeting place of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. There were men of action, speakers and artists, especially artists, from all possible genres. At first they came from all over the city and later from all around the globe. The crowd intensified as various events took place, so the promoters of the event were forced to find a new space that would be larger and more suited to their needs. It is now housed in the Lafayette Avenue, the heart of Brooklyn, offering much more than just theaters.

Included in this scene were dancers from the other side of the Ocean such as the suggestive Isadora Duncan (that was back in 1908) or Russian Nureyev (some decades later, in 1962). The charismatic president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who brought the United States out of the Great Depression with his “New Deal”, also spoke to his fellow citizens at the theater in 1940, when there were some 6,000 people who were content to listen to him from outside on the street.

“Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”

With the name “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”, a series of concerts with music of all genres will be given over the course of three days. BAM though overlaps one act with another and will be hosting additional events such as a work of theater and exhibition.

On May 5, there will be a continuous flow of performances by musicians from Brooklyn, in particular, but also from places all across the United Statesand beyond. The show begins with Atlas Sound, with musician Bradford Cox, champion composer of automatic writing, who will soon be embarking on a European tour with stops in Barcelona, Amsterdam, Porto, and Paris. Following will be the group Beirut, who will perform songs from their latest album “The Rip Tide” and delight the audience with their blend of pop rhythms and Mexican folk music.

The show continues with My Brightest Diamond and yMusic, a.k.a. the versatile singer and instrumentalist Shara Worden, who is such a believer in the new possibilities of Internet communication that she only sells her work online. Caveman, with their traditional pop, as shown in the accompanying video, will perform with Janka Nabay & The Bubu Gang (who combine electronic music with ethnic African rhythms). Benjamin Lanz, Oneohtrix Point Never, Skeletons, Daniel Lopatin or the voices of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus (which has already has a Grammy under its belt and has performed at the commemoration for 9/11) will complete the roster.
