The Gulbenkian Museum is one of the most important in the world thanks to the amount of treasures that it houses. The place is part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and it possesses Egyptian, Roman, Islamic, Asian and European art collections.
It was renovated and modernized noticeably in 2001 and it´s one of those places that you can´t not visit in Lisbon because it´s one of the most important private art collections in the world that the oil tycoon Calouste Gulbenkian put together during 40 years and that in 1955 at the age of 86, donated the whole collection to the Portuguese Government.
Some of the most important objects are an Egyptian golden mask, a vessel which is over 2700 years old and a striking collection of Hellenic coins.
In the European art section you can find pieces from Rembrant, Peter Paul Rubens, Claude Money, Van Dyck, Renoir and many others.
There´s also a statue of Lady Diana made by French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon which is outstanding. For all of these reasons visisting the Gulbenkian Museum is practically an obligation. You can do it finding Lisbon accommodation
