What do couples look for when they choose their honeymoon destination? Perhaps sandy beaches, turquoise waters, peace, tranquility, a romantic atmosphere… For those who can not afford (or simply don’t want) a vacation in the Caribbean or Polynesia, Europe has numerous destinations where you can spend a romantic week with your new husband or wife, and I’m not talking about only Paris and Venice. There’s a huge range of possibilities.

Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic
The Dalmatian coast is one of the most beautiful in Europe. All the coasts in Croatia offer turquoise waters and beaches surrounded by historic centers. They are also peaceful and an ideal spot for those wanting to spend a few days surrounded by beauty and enjoying the sun. Dubrovnik is certainly the most impressive Croatian destination. This walled city has a few beaches on the Adriatic Sea where one can relax. The center of the city has also retained the charm of past centuries, with cobblestone streets and Renaissance and Baroque palaces. And it has one of Europe´s most impressive restaurants, Nautika, an upscale restaurant with a jaw-dropping view of the sea that makes it a perfect location for a romantic evening. From Dubrovnik you can also take a ferry to the Lopud and Mljet Islands, which are naturally beautiful and offer lovely beaches.
Naples, the door of the Amalfi Coast
Italy is a popular destination for couples, although the city of Naples often gets placed behind cities like Venice and Rome. The truth is that the Amalfi Coastis just steps away from Naples and it offers a coastline of sandy beaches and intensely blue sea. Naples is the perfect starting point. From there, you can visit the charming town of Sorrento and its port or simply travel by boat one morning to the island of Capri, one of the most beautiful and romantic islands in Europe. These places are small and tradition is still very much in place. In addition to having warm weather most of the year, it’s the perfect spot for romantic walks on the beach and to enjoy the excellent local cuisine.
Marrakech, a different experience
Moroccois the perfect choice, especially the city of Marrakech, for anyone looking for something different. Marrakech is accessible from anywhere in Europe by plane and is a truly memorable experience. Romance is palpable in exotic destinations like this, where everything is so completely different to what we are used to in the Western world. It is difficult to list the city’s best qualities but among the most impressive is the exoticism of its streets, the souks and the gastronomy. The people are also extremely kind. The views at night from the terraces of Djemaa el-Fna or any house in the city of the illuminated streets and the sound of the prayers emanating from the various minarets of the city are simply unforgettable. Walks together through the smaller streets of the city with their distinctive views and smells will make your honeymoon in Morocco all that you hope it will be.
Rio de Janeiro, a beach paradise
Finally, one additional destination where you can easily spend your honeymoon is Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro offers everything one could want for a romantic holiday: beautiful beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana, a place of great beauty with iconic and traditional neighborhoods where you can walk and savor the essence of the city, including Santa Teresa with its colorful houses and hills, and authentic Brazilian cuisine. Perhaps you would like to hike Sugarloaf or to the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain. Admiring the views at night makes for a romantic outing in this city that is becoming increasingly popular among couples from around the world. And a caipirinha on Ipanema beach is certainly a welcome way to end the day.
