Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno

The Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, popularly known as IVAM, was created to explore, understand and disseminate the art created in the 20th century. The museum offers a programme of activities that present exhibitions, conferences, courses and publications that are very interesting.

The place is located at the shores of the River Turia with the back part that overlooks the historical centre of Valencia. IVAM comprises the Centro Júlio González, which opened its doors 1989, the Sala de la Muralla, that opened in 1991and it´s situated in the basement of the building which is the original construction of the remains of one of the fortresses that the city had in medieval times.

IVAM was inaugrated in 1989 and it´s divided in seven different galleries in which you can observe permanent and temporary exhibitions. One of the latter presents a wall with the medieval remains of Valencia. There are also sculptures and very interesting contemporary works.

The collection that the museum holds is over ten thousand works that illustrate the art that was formed throughout the 20th century and some of the most important things are, for example, a steel sculpture of cubist/surrealist style by Julio González as well as the photographic collection of Gabriel Cuallado.

If you´re interested in seeing the galleries of IVAM, you can rent apartments in Valencia and enjoy its art.
