cirque du soleil

Alegria was a show presented by Cirque du Soleil in 1994, in Montreal, for the tenth anniversary of its founding. It´s a less circus and more drama show because it faces the issue of abuse of power and the struggle for freedom. This musical arrangements and lighting are intended to generate an attractive atmosphere , where the magic of motion and color transport the viewer to the essence of the conflict. This interesting approach, with the participation of 55 artists and musicians from 17 countries has delighted millions

The Cirque du Soleil was founded in 1984 by street performers Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier, in Baie-Saint Paul, Quebec, Canada. The name comes from the reflections of Laliberté that the sun gives energy and life to all beings in the world, just like the circus, where the show transmits vital energy to the audience.

The quest to create a different show, where the circus ring becomes a place of expression and transmission of ideas, took Guy Laliberté to hire Guy Caron National of the Circus School of Canada to invent a contemporary circus with a focus on themes, eliminating the exploitation of animals and incorporating cultural diversity of the world. These factors were decisive for the success of Cirque du Soleil, and the creation of a contemporary trend of circus art known as cirque nouveau.

This fresh look at one of the oldest performing arts in the world, has brought enormous popularity and good economic returns. Today the circus has performers from five continents and has created a school that many young people follow, hoping to join their shows some day

But not everything has been sweet, they have had their dosage of problems. The first years of hard work outcame in many failures, both in a technical, human, and economical aspect. In 1984 the Gaspésie-Iles-de-la-Madeleine proposal had several setbacks, including a crisis with European artists of the show that denounced in the press the unfair working conditions they received. However, they restructured and initiated with artistic director Guy Caron a redesigning of the show

Their best known shows are Alegría, Saltimbanco, Nouvelle Experience and Fascination among others.
