The Cirque du Soleil is back in Barcelona with ‘Alegría’

Those that have already seen a live show of the Cirque du Soleil know that they´re not actors or trapeze artists or even clowns; they´re everything at once. They make people laugh, they thrill them and their jumps are amazing. Now, their show ´Alegría´ has arrived in Barcelona, and since alegría means joy in Spanish, that´s how you´re going to feel after seeing them. It´s a perfect plan for this Christmas for adults and children, because the magic of the Cirque du Soleil does not have age limits.

Alegria cirque du soleil barcelona

If you enter the world of ´Alegría´ in the circus, you´ll come across a universe inhabited by the King of the Dumb, aristocrats, storytellers and popular characters with contemporary aptitudes. They will take you to a world you never imagined, in which you´ll feel a judge of it and part of it at the same time. It´s a tribute to baroque, to the elegance of the old facing the modernity of its movements. Acrobats, clowns, actors, dancers… the Cirque du Soleil doesn´t leave anyone indifferent. When you see them, you´ll feel like they´re risking their life in each of their moves.

´Alegría´ will take you directly to an imaginary royal court filled with magic and fantasy that undoubtedly will remind you of a carnival. The colours, the shine, the textures… everything will make you feel like you´ve just landed in the middle of the Rio de Janeiro carnival. The truth is that it´s a great visual show. In this event of the Cirque du Soleil, different characters coexist among each other that apparently have very little to do with one another. The representatives of the Old Order, dressed up in luxurious costumes, and the leaders of the New Order, who wear synthetic costumes and whose objective is to control the future. They don´t want to be left behind like those of the Old Order, stuck in a time far far behind.

The one who will show you this curious universe of strange and extravagant beings is the character of Fleur, a strange guide with a hunchback with an addictive lit-up scepter. He is the narrator that will present you the rest of the characters of ´Alegría´.

Note this: you can see this wonderful show at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona from the 26th of December 2012 until the 6th of January of 2013. It´s a great gift for the holiday season for the lucky one who gets it. In my case, I think I will ask Father Christmas for my ticket. On the 26th, 27th, 28th, 2nd and 3rd, the show will be at 9.30pm and on the 29th, 30th, and 4th, it will have two shows: at 5.30pm and at 9.30pm. On the 31st and 6th of January, it will be at 6pm and on the 5th at 1pm. Ticket prices-wise, the cheapest ones cost 31.50€ and the most expensive ones 81€.

Aside from Spain, ´Alegría´ has reached France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia and Lithuania, and now it has arrived at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona to present the locals with this unique show.

How to get to the Palau Sant Jordi? Easy. Everyone in the city knows the venue. The best way to do it is to get the Metro to Espanya on the 1 (red) or 3 (green) line or the 50 or 51 buses. Once there, you can walk get to the venue, which is on Passeig Olímpic 5-7. It can hold up to 18,000 people since it´s an enormous arena built for the Olympic Games of Barcelona 92 by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. It´s the main venue for the big events that take place in Barcelona, since its structure allows it to adapt to any type of event, whether it´s a sporting one or a leisure one. It´s a great place to see the new show by the Cirque du Soleil this Christmas.
