The average public (not the expert one) practically doesn´t know about what´s going on in Moroccan contemporary art. Although Marrakech is a favourite destination of the European and even the American traveller, they don´t usually know the infinity of galleries that fill the old Arabic Medina.
Well, this art gallery that we have here today, Matisse Art Gallery, is so successful that it has two open venues, one in Marrakech and the other in the administrative capital of Morocco, Casablanca. Hidden in an alleyway, in an old aristocratic villa, the Matisse Art Gallery offers its private collections to the international public who visits its rooms, with exhibitions by local artists (with over 25 names in its list of artists).
Marrakech therefore, is much more than its photogenic square of Djemaa el-Fna, its numerous crafts shops, its hammams or its tea shops, which is not bad, as well as good art galleries for the international traveller. Remember that, if one afternoon or a morning, it doesn´t matter, you´re in your apartments in Marrakech without a good plan, you can head towards Matisse Art Gallery. The entry is free and the staff don´t bother you.
