Monasteries of the Jerónimos of Belém

The Monasteries of the Jerónimos of Belém are considered one of the most famous works of Lisbon and the whole of Portugal.
Faithful representatives of the Manueline style, it´s the construction that stands out the most in this architectonic category from the time where Gothic and Renaissance mixed.
Located in the famous district of Belém, the church/monastery was designed by Juan del Castillo in the 16th century. It´s importance is because it contains the remains of Manuel I and all of his family, among many other kings of Portugal who rest in peace there. Also poets, writers and great navigators lay in the Monasteries of the Jeronimos, giving it special relevance to its lives and works.
In 1850 two museums were added to the building: the Museo de la Marina and the National Archeology Museum, which are found on the different wings of the construction.
Recently, in 2007, the Treaty of Lisbon was signed there, which replaces the European Constitution, which makes it a historical building of yesterday and today.
