At the beginning of the 19th century, two large train stations were built in Paris. One of them was the Gare de Lyon and the other one, the Gare d´Orsay. The latter had the most prominent place, close to the River Seine and it was built by the great architect Victor Laloux.
But with time the train station began to be useless because it was very small for the big trains that had startedto be built and, in 1961, the station was abandoned completely and, in fact, they saved it from demolition.
In 1978, the President Giscard d´Estaing decided to convert it into a museum and today it´s one of the most important in Paris which presents art from the 19th and 20th century.
The place doesn´t only have paintings but it also covers art from different points of view and it includes sculptures, prints, photographs, films, architecture and urbanism.
The restoration of the Musée d´Orsay started in 1979 and finished in 1986, and it was inaugurated by the President François Miterrand.
Today it´s impossible to visit the French city and not visit this important museum. If you want, you can rent apartments in Paris and not miss out on this chance.
