Ancient gods and myths

Until the 23rd of March, the Catalunya National Art Museum, MNAC, inaugurates the interesting exhibition ´Ancient Gods and Myths´. The exhibition, that´s organized by the Numismatic Cabinet of Catalonia and commissioned by Marta Campos, its preservation chief. The exhibition delves into the outlook and the myths created by those who lived in the Iberian Peninsula from the 5th century BC until the Visigoths arrived. The exhibition shows us the historical development processes of the Iberian Peninsula and the influence of the myths and beliefs in the configuration of their culture through a new point of view, which addresses its genesis and how it was transmitted through the coin, an object which has historically been used to make exchanges of products and services. With the aim of giving it a dialectic content, the exhibition has structured itself into three thematic axis: the influence of Greek and Oriental cults, the religiousness of primitive cultures of the Iberian Peninsula and Romanization until the arrival of the Visigoths. The area of Ibiza and the coasts of the Peninsula were colonized by migrations of Greek and Phoenician-Punic populations, who settled and created their habitat and reproduced their original culture, which meant that they also reproduced their beliefs, that revolved around gods. By generating ways of organization and creating the coin, they engraved their gods on it to give a divine backing to this exchange object, putting on them Zeus, Bes, Tanit, Athena, Artemis or Melkart. Until not long ago there was ignorance on the gods who governed the imaginary of the populations of Hispania. Thanks to the images that have been found, it has been...

Roman Barcelona

Barcelona today is so fascinating that we often forget that the famous modernist buildings and impeccable urban planning would never have happened if the Roman Empire had not founded the city. Roman heritage is not limited to the ruins exposed in the Museum of Barcelona. When designing the first city they established two axis – the cardo maximus maximus and decumacus – that crossed the center point of the colony. If we superimpose the original and current plans of Barcelona we find that this center corresponds to the Plaça Sant Jaume, just where now the offices of the City Council and the Generalitat stand. The center of the metropolis has remained unchanged for thousands of years! For curious, the decumacus maximus is the axis formed by the C / de la Ciutat and C / Bisbe, while the cardo maximus would be found find in the C / Ferran and C / Jaume I. The surprises do not end there. Barcelona was founded by the Romans in the first century BC.  around the fifteenth year, but there had been people in that area before. Its position was strategic because it was protected by the Mons Taber – a promontory fifty feet high – and, moreover, was situated between two streams, the Cagalell and the Merdança to the west and east respectively. In fact, its proximity to the sea made the basins of the streams  a natural harbor. At that time, the waterfront was at the junction between the C / Ample with the C / de la Fusteria! This explains why it became the capital still far from the...

Estopa 2.0 in Barcelona

On February 25th  the brothers David and Jose Manuel Munoz who form the group Estopa will perform at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. David and Jose Manuel are two guys from Cornella de Llobregat (Barcelona) sons of immigrants from Extremadura, who began their musical career in 1999. Estopa recorded a demo that circulated through several record companies. BMG / Ariola offered them a record deal after listening to the single  of their first album “The slit of your skirt,” loaded with rumba, freshness and street wit. Their musical influences from their childhood are rumba groups like Los Chichos, The Chunguitos or Bordón 4 and songwriters like Joaquín Sabina. In fact, Estopa is an updated and improved version of these rumba bands with lyrics that are pure street poetry They started  a musical style you might call “very pimp Catalan pop rumba ” a style that has evolved to a more commercial 2poppy” one and less influenced by flamenco, but essentially they remain the same band after selling over 4 million records. Illegal downloads have affected them but they are the Spanish group that sell more albums in their Country. Their first album “Estopa” was released at the end of 1999 and in 2000 this album is a success that leads them to sell 1,400,000 copies, with many radio hits and dozens of concerts throughout Spain and part of Latin America. This phenomenon was consolidated in 2001 with their highly anticipated second album “Destrangis”, with even more sarcastic lyrics and a more rumba kind of  style with a little less rock and hardcore in it. They start selling out...
