Schism at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid

In an impressive Neo-classic building from the 18th century, between the Ritz and Palace hotels, in the middle of San Jerónimo and Paseo del Prado – in the elegant Villahermosa Palace (in one of whose rooms it´s said that Franz Liszt gave one of his most memorable concerts) – the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum http://www.museothyssen.org/thyssen/home is one of the most important art galleries in not only Spain but probably the whole of Europe. Along with the prestigious Prado Museum, and the Reina Sofia Museum, it constitutes what has been named the “Madrid Golden Mile,” receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The Prado collection – whose main attraction, with exceptions such as Francisco Goya, is its great selection of Renaissance and Baroque art – covers a period which goes from the Medieval to 19th century Spanish painting, whilst the Reina Sofia picks up from this exact moment and takes us through 20th century art, with an extraordinary collection which includes the only Cezanne and Hopper in Madrid, and the likes of Ghirlandaio, Uccello, Durero, Caravaggio, El Greco, Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin, Chagall, Marc, Klee, Giacometti, Lichtenstein and Beckmann, to name but a few. With such an impressive quality collection, perhaps the most remarkable thing is the fact that it includes styles of art usually lacking in other Spanish art collections, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, German Expressionism, the Vanguard experimentalism of the early 20th century, and an important group of paintings from 19th century North America – unique in the sphere of European art. However, the future of the 240 painting strong collection in Madrid could be in danger. They are...

International Museum Day in Madrid

May is the month of the museums in Spain, and in Madrid they are celebrating this in style by offering two nights of free entry into the city’s museums. The traditional date for the Night of the Museum in Madrid is 15 May, to coincide with the feast day of this city’s patron saint, San Isidro. This year, however, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has proposed 14 May as the night for celebrating the event they have titled Museum and Memory. Madrid has decided to extend the occasion over both nights, thereby giving people more time to visit some museums and get a little closer to an important part of humanity’s heritage. As part of the event, ICOM have created a multimedia programme entitled “A Piece of the Story”, an attempt to share the fascinating history behind each museum’s collection. This will be published on the webpage of the European Museum Night. On this page you can also find information about the history of every museum that has sent their information to ICOM. Over the course of these two days, Madrid’s museums will stay open until 1 a.m., as well as running special programmes. There will be concerts, workshops, dancing, conferences and guided tours. Some museums are offering special programmes all week. One of these is the Museo Arqueológico Nacional (National Archaeological Museum) which offers guided tours on 18 May to show the links between the past and the present. El Templo de Debod (The Debod Temple) and la Biblioteca Nacional (The National Library) have also programmed special events for the occasion. Another venue that is fun and...
