BAM Cafe in New York This story began 150 years ago in a place set apart from what was then still known as the New World. There, in a port city filled with skyscrapers, in a neighborhood known for its bohemians and excellent artists, in an old abandoned building, the BAM Cafe was born as the meeting place of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. There were men of action, speakers and artists, especially artists, from all possible genres. At first they came from all over the city and later from all around the globe. The crowd intensified as various events took place, so the promoters of the event were forced to find a new space that would be larger and more suited to their needs. It is now housed in the Lafayette Avenue, the heart of Brooklyn, offering much more than just theaters. Included in this scene were dancers from the other side of the Ocean such as the suggestive Isadora Duncan (that was back in 1908) or Russian Nureyev (some decades later, in 1962). The charismatic president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who brought the United States out of the Great Depression with his “New Deal”, also spoke to his fellow citizens at the theater in 1940, when there were some 6,000 people who were content to listen to him from outside on the street. “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” With the name “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”, a series of concerts with music of all genres will be given over the course of three days. BAM though overlaps one act with another and will be hosting additional events such as a work of...
There are bands that we forget about for a while and that we think that they´re finished. Suddenly they surprise us with a new album and, more importantly, another unforgettable tour from a band with so much history and legendary songs such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are back with a tour around Europe and North America that will satisfy their fans. They will travel to Europe on June 26th and will return to their homeland in November 2012. Two of the most highly-awaited concerts will take place on the 4th and 5th of May at Prudential Center, New Jersey, south of New York City. The new album that they´re going to present is called ´I´m With You´, and it has been brewing and previewing since 2011. Before this, due to their 2 year break, rumours were going around that the legendary band were going to split up because their guitarist John Frusciante had announced that he was leaving the band and although at first no substitute was announced, they named Josh Klinghoffer as Frusciante´s replacement, who would also be on piano and chorus as well as guitar. With the band rolling once again, their return to the stages was announced to present their new album, called ´I´m With You´, with a homonymous tour that started in Bogotá, Colombia, in September 2011. ´The Adventures of Raindance Maggie´, one of their singles, quickly rose to #1 and finally, the album was released in August 2011 and with songs such as ´Monarchy of Roses´ one can say that it was worth the way. ´I´m With You´ is the band´s...
From the Côte d´Azur, from the beautiful town of Antibes, we get the music of this band that was born over ten years ago and that have six albums in their history. As part of the world tour of their latest album, ´Hurry up, We´re Dreaming´, they land in New York, at Terminal 5 NYC, on the 10th of May. M83 at Terminal 5 NYC Anthony Gonzalez (French of Spanish heritage) and Nicolas Fromegeau have known how to position their electronic music thanks to the repeated broadcastings on BBC Radio and the evocative power of their songs, which have been the headlining song for many TV series and films. If the reader wants to find out which ones, he just has to see the promotional video of their latest single, ´Midnight City´. Here the music goes brilliantly with the staging of the official video where some children with paranormal powers search for freedom. It´s no surprise that they´ve hit the 10 million mark on YouTube with this song. Terminal 5 NYC, on 610 West 56th Street, between 11th and 12th Avenue, is the youngest concert venue of New York City. However, its programme is incredible. It´s located close to the Western entry to Central Park although, as you know, we´re in New York and three avenues one way or another is quite a walk. It has events on every day and they also organize private activities on demand. The M83 concert has already sold all the early bird tickets so you will just have to buy the ticket on the day of the concert. It will be at 8pm...

Nobody likes to show their true colors and even less so if they have global implications. Since July 2007 the world learned about some of the most important secrets of various governments as well as relevant information about their communications, with the creation of the website Wikileaks, founded in 2006 by Australian Julian Assange. Assange’s idea was to provide citizens with relevant information that ultimately affects their lives and should have a public character. The way is through the publication of classified documents reach the hands of the non-profit organization in a totally anonymous, thanks to its “electronic box”. After collecting this information we proceed to an analysis to verify authenticity. The network is fully shielded to achieve its, in theory, noble purposes, but this has not prevented Assange to be currently pursued. Julian Assange is the face of WikiLeaks, an organization whose workforce is difficult to identify. The data we have about him regarding more personal biography come to us through other people. What we know is that when he was young he and participated in a group of hackers and activists who later turned to the open source programming. The most impact leaks Wikileaks site has shown, was reveled in 2010. One of those is a 2007 video in which a U.S. military helicopter deliberately attacked and killed two reporters from the company Reuters and nine other people in Baghdad. Also came to light some documents concerning the conflict with Afghanistan through newspapers whose source was the famous Wikileaks, which gave them the information for free. The information unveiled spoke of attacks to civilians, friendly fire from...
Route 66, which is also known as the Main Street of America, Will Rogers Highway and the Mother Road, is one of those intrepid routes full of myths and legends on which everything is possible. It was originally part of the U.S. Highway System. Created in 1927, it originally ran from Chicago through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California, ending in Los Angeles after a total distance of 3,923 kilometers. In the 30s it was the main route of emigrants on their way out west. In the 50s it was a popular vacation route for travelers to Los Angeles, passing through the Arizona desert, whose crater was one of the most popular stops. With this boom in tourism, all kinds of attractions began to pop up along the road, from motels shaped like tepees to shops specialized in reptile breeding or souvenirs made by Native Americans. In 1985, Route 66 was officially decommissioned from the U.S. Highway System and replaced by the Interstate Highway System. The entire stretch through Arizona, where the legendary Historic Route sign is repeated every mile, was declared of artistic heritage. It is the section of the road most visited by fans of the historic route who wish to relive their epic journeys of the past with help of a Mustang, Chevy, or Harley, sometimes as a group, a couple or even solo. Route 66 is more than just miles of road, however, it is a historical route and one that is full of myths, legends, hope, progress and freedom as well as literature and music. Steinbeck, who was from California, is...
Film is a business that never ends. Each year, there’s always something more – new movies, sexy actors and actresses. Despite the marketing efforts of Hollywood, when it comes to our favorite actors, very few actually leave a strong impression from their performance or are remembered for a very long time. What really makes a male actor a good one? Character, attitude and intensity. It is difficult to define some of these at a time when the genre of cinema and our approach to what is deemed “masculine” is changing. Maybe the psychological burden of interpretation, beyond gender, is what really survives. There are, however, three actors who forged the way over the past forty years when it comes to interpretation, attitude and image: Marlon Brando, Robert de Niro and Al Pacino. These three, perhaps the most emblematic and rebellious in Hollywood, have managed to conquer the hearts of all true lovers of cinema. What makes them so charismatic? It is the intensity with which they perform and the arduous process they use to immerse themselves in their roles and construct their characters. Few actors have the ability to reach their high level. One of them, though, is Michael Fassbender, who continues his ascent from the production line of the very commercial Hollywood. From his performance as Stelios, the young Spartan soldier in the unforgettable movie “300”, Fassbender has managed to bring a degree of realism to his characters. For example, his hard work in preparing for the role of Bobby Sands in the film “Hunger” by Steve McQueen in 2008 is worth noting. For this important film, Fassbender had to...
Generally, one doesn´t begin reviewing the life of someone with their death, but when it´s the 50th anniversary of the death of someone, we want to do it like this. Marilyn Monroe died on the 5th of August 1962. There´s no doubt about the fact that she was one of the most influential figures of the 20th century, an icon that became a legend, one of the figures that has created the most merchandising. However, behind this figure there´s a person of whom little is known about, eclipsed behind her role as a star. After a difficult childhood, from family to family, with various sexual abuses before she turned 12, the future wasn´t smiling at Norma Jeane Mortensen (later Baker after her mother´s surname). She got married for the first time at the age of 16 and began to work occasionally as a model at the age of 19. At that time, Norma decided to dye her hair blonde. After her first divorce, she began to participate in auditions for films and TV series, finally being hired by 20th Century Fox. It was Ben Lyon, one of the cast executives, who suggested she changed her name: Marilyn as a tribute to the actress Marilyn Miller and Monroe because it was her mother´s maiden name. In the 1950s Marilyn was already a big star, America´s blonde bride. In 1954 she married what was perhaps her only true love but also the most brief one, the baseball player Joe DiMaggio, a marriage that lasted only a few months. In 1956 she married the playwright Arthur Miller, who also wrote scripts for...
Living in the storm of pop is sacrificing your soul to the media, television, internet, your personal life becomes public domain. Stardom has a high price to pay when you want to be on the cover of all fashion magazines, television interviews and presentations, to be in everyone´s mouth and sell music and image. Being a pop star today can be highly risky for new artists, full of youth who risk being caught in the media storm center and in some cases, end up losing. Many have failed to take advantage of these conditions, and to manage their careers in a professional and strict control of what happens both inside and outside of the camera flashes and the tumult of the written media. Madonna, the ineffable pop queen, has been one of the brightest stars in the past thirty years that has consolidated her career maneuvering it herself. From her personal image, sound recordings, videos and choreography, Madonna has kept full control of production, of course earning among many a bad reputation for a “control freak” . Not unusual for she belongs to the zodiac sign Leo. Perhaps Madonna was able to take advantage of everything that came to her and on the other hand, faced the media and communication being still more irreverent, resulting from the intense sexual content of many of moves, songs and lyrics. She wisely addressed the issue of media noise, not the opposite. Married twice and with lots of polyphonic sex involved, several children and films, there is no scandal that could topple the mother of contemporary divas. Rihanna´s story is somewhat different. The...
Anonymous has been reconfiguring the political activism scene in the last few years. From their activities to make the Sony and US Government webpages collapse during the arrests of the directors of Megaupload, up to the more recent delivery of emails of the Stratfor agency through Wikileaks, in which they showed the true hate that exists towards Julian Assange, Anonymous carry on surprising us with their ´hacktivism´ and the impact that it´s causing both in politics and contemporary culture. In fact, these are times of economic, political and moral crisis. On the other hand, the social networks have shown to be a fundamental tool of new political activism, gathering people for demonstrations and protests to denounce the authoritarian abuse and to begin a search for equality and democracy, as well as economic stability for everyone. Perhaps it´s a bit strange for us to consider that a ´click´ or a ´like´ or a ´re-tweet´ can have a real impact in the real world, where things aren´t as immediate and simple. However, the power of the information transmission is essential today, even more important than the content of the transmission itself; the power of the political subjects is within reach of the social networks, because it can reach a larger number of users and also start the events and consequences that this information transmission generates. With this panorama, Anonymous just intervenes in webpages and makes them collapse, in an action that many users participate and that has little to do with breaking a law or altering the content of the website they´re occupying. The website collapse that Anonymous carry out is more of...
